Coming only three weeks after VirtualBox 7.1.2, the VirtualBox 7.1.4 release is here to introduce automatic upgrading of the Linux Guest Additions via the Devices menu on ARM systems, improved flickering, black screen, and other screen update issues with recent Linux kernels, and adds initial support for the upcoming Linux 6.12 kernel series in Linux Guest Additions, with the following warning.

VirtualBox 7.1.4 also restores network boot support and adds the missing LsiLogic MPT SCSI driver to fix booting from devices attached to this device when using the EFI firmware, both being broken in VirtualBox 7.1, and fixes an issue with restoring the saved NAT state from VirtualBox 7.0.x instances.

VirtualBox 7.1.4 Released, Here’s What’s New

VirtualBox, the popular open-source virtualization software, has just released version 7.1.4. This latest update is a maintenance release focused on bug fixes and incremental improvements.

It follows the major update of version 7.1, launched in September, which brought a modernized user interface and several new features.

Among the notable updates, the VirtualBox graphical user interface now includes the latest National Language Support update for Turkish, Indonesian, and Italian, ensuring broader accessibility for users worldwide.

VirtualBox 7.1.4 includes a small set of improvements, bug fixes, and stability enhancements to this open-source, cross-platform virtualisation tool, though new major new features are included.

Among the changes are 2 which affect the Linux Guest Additions package (installing this enables Linux VMs to integrate better with the underlying host OS and hardware, be it a Linux, macOS, Windows, or Solaris host).

Firstly, Linux Guest Additions picks up initial support for the upcoming Linux kernel 6.12 release, which due out in the next few months. Adding initial support now means VMs should just keep chugging away without any major hiccups if/when the user upgrades to Linux 6.12.

Secondly, Linux Guest Additions now has an automatic upgrade option (via the Devices menu) for those running Linux guests in VirtualBox on Macs equipped with ARM (aka Apple Silicon/M-Series) chips.

On October 15, VirtualBox received another update, a quick three weeks after the previous release (v 7.1.2). Even though version 7.1.4 is a maintenance release, it has added initial support for the latest Linux kernel (v 6.12). However, that addition comes with a caveat.

According to the official changelog, "In kernel 6.12, KVM initializes virtualization on module loading by default. This prevents VirtualBox VMs from starting. To avoid this, either add "kvm.enable_virt_at_load=0" parameter into kernel command line or unload corresponding kvm_XXX module."

Along with the support for kernel 6.12, VirtualBox 7.1.4 also introduces automatic upgrading of the Linux Guest Additions for ARM systems, which is handled via the Device menu.
