Linux Mint 22.1 Slated for Release in December with Revamped Cinnamon Theme
Slated for release in December 2024, near the Christmas holidays, Linux Mint 22.1 will ship with the soon-to-be-released Cinnamon 6.4 desktop environment featuring a revamped theme that’s much darker and contrasted than before, rounded elements, redesigned dialogs, and a gap between the applets and the panel.
The new default Cinnamon theme in Linux Mint 22.1 also introduces a “Force Quit” dialog rewritten in Clutter that will appear when an application is frozen and no longer responds. In addition, the media buttons and Workspace OSD were modernized, a new status applet was introduced, and notifications, animations, and the main menu were improved for the new Cinnamon theme.

Linux Mint Gives First Look at New Cinnamon Theme - OMG! Ubuntu
The way Cinnamon looks in Linux Mint (the distribution) is not the way it looks if you install the Cinnamon desktop yourself on a different distro. There, assuming a theme pack is isn’t pulled in as a dependency, you’ll see the default built-in Cinnamon theme.
And it’s that built-in theme that Linux Mint is currently improving.
Mint says “the new default theme [is] much darker and contrasted than before. Objects are rounded and a gap was introduced between the applets and the panel.”

Linux Mint Shows How The New Cinnamon Theme Looks Like
Earlier this year, we were introduced to the Linux Mint 22 release, which landed with many major changes, including an updated desktop environment, Cinnamon 6.2.
Since then, the developers have been busy working on further refining their offerings and recently announced that they were working on a new default Cinnamon theme and some tweaks for Linux Mint.
Now, it appears that they have delivered on their claims. Let's see what they have been up to. 😃
Linux Mint's Cinnamon 6.4 gets a sleek new look ahead of December launch - Neowin
The Linux Mint project head, Clem Lefebvre, has shared what the community has been up to over the last month and it's quite interesting what he has to share. This month, the flagship desktop environment, Cinnamon, has been receiving an overhaul to make it look more up-to-date, the new theme has even landed in the Cinnamon master branch which means people can use it soon.
As a bit of background, Lefebvre said last month that while Linux Mint ships with the Mint-Y default theme, other distributions of Linux that use Cinnamon tend to stick to the default theme which has grown comparatively ugly over time.
Lefebvre said the ideal situation is for each distro to use its own Cinnamon theme to spruce things up a bit but as that is not happening in some cases, Cinnamon 6.4 will include a "much-improved default theme."

Cinnamon 6.4 Promises Pleasant Surprises for Desktop Users
At the beginning of the month, we introduced you to some of the changes expected to be included in the upcoming Mint 22.1 release.
Today, Clement Lefebvre, lead of the Linux Mint project, shared another dose of updates in his monthly report, covering the work completed in September and upcoming plans for the project. Here are the highlights.
One of the most noticeable changes is the new default theme, which has landed on the master branch and will be part of the next Cinnamon 6.4 release.
The theme is significantly darker and offers more contrast than previous versions. Objects within the interface are now rounded, and a gap has been introduced between applets and the panel, giving the desktop environment a modern and polished appearance.
