On January first we basically celebrate a calendar event, not anything astronomical or anything of astronomical significance (like solstice). In China, the new year (Year of the Horse) hasn't begun yet and there are many other calendars out there, e.g. Japanese calendar (Wikipedia says that "[p]rior to the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in 1873, the reference calendar was based on the lunisolar Chinese calendar").
This morning we turned the page (literally!) on our physical calendars. This year will have 365 days in it. In 2028 we'll have 366 days. █
