The Outlook From Manchester
We are well on track (the twentieth day of September is upon us) and students resume courses in some places. It was 23 years ago (here in Manchester) that I began my doctoral degree and I look back without any regrets; months earlier I turned down a programming job offer from London and a few years later I met Rianne. She and I began leading this site, which was set up in June 2004, only months after I had started my Ph.D.
In hindsight, seeing how much GNU/Linux grew and hos much the community around this site grew, we're humbled and very much motivated to carry on for many years to come. Yesterday a lady asked us if we went away on holiday and we explained to her that since we're active in some Web sites we spent August at home, a staycation of sorts. We were on holiday until 19 days ago.
This year our average of new pages per day increased, probably now at its highest ever (since 2004). That's despite spending more time asleep and despite many news sites perishing (we curate what's left).
The main three curators are based in Europe (not just Manchester), but our team spans 3 continents and our scope/reach continue to increase.
We don't worry too much about the Web's demise; we're doing OK in spite of it. █
