GNU/Linux in Asia is Showing Shifting Interests
Asia's largest population:
There's talk of "Simplified Chinese rising" in GamingOnLinux, trying to explain why GNU/Linux is currently seen as smaller among DRM adopters. Quoting Liam: "The Steam Hardware & Software Survey for September 2026 is here, showing another swing for Simplified Chinese as a language on Steam. We've seen two months of Simplified Chinese rising now, so it's entirely possible there's an issue there - we'll keep an eye on it and update our stats if Valve do any corrections. We quite often see Linux drop when Simplified Chinese rises."
From what we can gather, on the grand scheme of things GNU/Linux is doing best in Asia (compared to other continents), at last based on statCounter. Even in China it's doing OK.
Steam tracks less than 100 million people (Valve customers) and they're not randomly chosen. They're "self-selecting" in some sense. █
