Qualcomm Announces Snapdragon X2 Linux Developer Preview
Qualcomm has put out an early developer preview of Linux for Snapdragon X2 Series laptops, asking kernel developers, distro maintainers, and hardware enablement engineers to get on this hardware and start testing.
They have been laying the groundwork for this since Snapdragon Summit 2025, and the push today is toward getting drivers into mainline rather than shipping out-of-tree patches that only a handful of people can maintain.
Qualcomm is officially working on Linux support for X2 ARM laptops
Qualcomm flew us out to Snapdragon Summit 2026 for a hands-on experience with the all-new, cutting-edge Googlebooks and Microsoft Surface laptops. And although the event has been relatively predictable, Wednesday's briefing closed out with a big surprise—Qualcomm is officially working to support Linux on Snapdragon X2 laptops, brands like ASUS have already committed to offer Linux-flavored versions of their X2-powered devices, and a developer preview is available today for those with the hardware to test it.
As explained on the Qualcomm blog, Debian 13 is currently being utilized as the reference and testing environment for Linux on Snapdragon X2 hardware. Foundational Debian support will be complete by the end of 2026, while Ubuntu certification, which should be the more common choice among laptop manufacturers, is planned for early 2027.
Qualcomm goes official with Snapdragon X laptop Linux support
It’s taken a couple decades, but something big has finally started happening for how we get computing done on laptops. After years of trying to be tiny desktop computers, running the same kind of chips that were never really designed for power efficiency, laptops began broadly embracing RISC computing — including models built around Qualcomm Snapdragon chips like the X series. This week at Qualcomm’s annual Snapdragon Summit, the company is sharing news of a big new upgrade for such models that power users are really going to love.
For all the speed and battery life they offer, Snapdragon laptops have had at least one big blind spot: Linux. Even though different Snapdragon chips have been powering Android (with its deep Linux roots) devices for ages, initial Snapdragon X laptops lacked support for mainstream Linux distros.
As part of today’s PC keynote, Qualcomm shares that Linux is becoming available on Snapdragon laptops. We’re getting started with Debian support, which is set to arrive before the end of the year.
Qualcomm is helping Linux run better on Snapdragon X2 laptops with an Early Developer Preview
Here is a fact-based summary of the story contents:
If you own a Snapdragon X2 device but aren't too pleased with its current state on Linux, I have excellent news. Since Snapdragon Summit 2025, Qualcomm has been hard at work settling things in the world of FOSS. Now, the company is ready to show off its results with an Early Developer Preview.
Qualcomm will finally support Linux on Snapdragon X2 chips.
“For many years developers have asked us for one thing, Linux on Snapdragon. We heard you,” says Kedar Kondap, SVP and general manager of compute and gaming at Qualcomm. Speaking at Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit, Kondap says Linux support with Debian will be available “at the end of this year” for Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon X2 series of chips. Qualcomm is upstreaming core drivers, including for its Hexagon NPU and Adreno GPU. Ubuntu support is also coming in the first half of 2027.
