"Linux" Isn't Turning 35 Next Week
Rain is needed here and rain is back, so we've changed our plans for today and we're staying home this morning.
News volume has gone down noticeably, which we don't really mind. We want to mind our own business and enjoy this vacation.
Next week (7 days from now) the Linux Foundation will tell us that Linux turns 35. Remember that the important anniversary is actually next month. It's GNU/Linux turning 43. Without GNU, Linux would never have taken off. In earlier interviews Torvalds openly acknowledged GNU's importance.
If one counts the day of actual GNU implementations, the 43rd anniversary is in January. To quote what we did earlier this year: "In 1983 Stallman launched the Free Software Movement by announcing the project to develop the GNU operating system, planned to consist entirely of free software. Stallman began working on GNU on January 5, 1984."
What many people call "Linux" started in the 1980s. Some people who say "Linux" think of UNIX, which started a lot earlier. █
