Review: Helwan Linux 5.0
Quoting: DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD. —
The above paragraphs probably make it sound like I dislike Helwan. At first that may have been true, but I'd say it's more accurate to state I was confused by the distribution. I couldn't figure out why the project's developers made the choices they did or what niche Helwan was trying to fill or who it was targeting. It feels strange, to me, to include a friendly front-end to a local web service (something most coders know how to activate without a GUI), but not include a graphical software centre. I wasn't running into many problems with Helwan, but I certainly found the experience awkward.
What drew me in, what made me start to appreciate Helwan, was that this is the first distribution I have used which aimed to be "for developers" which, as a developer, I felt was actually trying to be useful for developers. Included tools such as the local web server, Qt Creator, database tools, multiple programming languages and VS Code all offered practical options. Every other "developer" distribution (or edition of a distribution) I have used felt empty, or as though they were all flash and no practical utilities. Helwan is a very rare exception which includes tools and organizes them which would make sense for a developer to use in a professional setting.
Every other "developer" distribution I've used felt like a imitation of what a business manager had seen on a developer's screen once and tried to recreate, assuming all developers would like that theme or that specific tool. Helwan actually includes tools which, as a developer, I will use on a regular basis.
The distribution is still strange in its style and a bit awkward and I don't understand a lot of the unusual combinations and choices. However, there are some practical bits too and some tools included which will appeal to people who write code. I wouldn't go so far as to say I recommend Helwan, but I am curious to see in what ways it evolves in the coming years.
