Nura comes as an abbreviation of Nuraghe, which are ancient (3000 BC and older) granite structures found in Sardinia in Italy, many of which still stand today. The deeper meaning is the stability and the resistance to millenniums, which fits well with the our project as the idea has been from the start to keep devices our OS runs on useful for a long time. The name was contributed by Davide Depau as part of our initial request for community contributions for the new name. Thanks a lot Davide!

Linux project gets a new name because not many people knew about it
postmarketOS. Does that name ring a bell? No? Exactly. The postmarketOS team, after about a year of deliberation, has decided to rename the project to something much simpler that rolls off the tongue: Nura.
postmarketOS, for those who don't know, is a Linux distro that aims to offer a true, mainline GNU/Linux experience on mobile devices and offers various user interfaces, including Phosh (GNOME-based) and Plasma Mobile (KDE-based). Because the OS is based on Alpine Linux, it is extremely lightweight, can run native Linux desktop apps, and can be used to breathe life into old, abandoned devices that no longer receive official Android updates.
The team said it decided to rebrand postmarketOS to Nura because the original branding simply felt way too long, hard to pronounce, and very easy to mistype with its bizarre mid-word letter casing. Some people write it as "Postmarketos", "PostmarketOS", "post-market OS," and of course the proper "postmarketOS". This, according to the team, made it difficult to market the OS.
