Rich Trouton ☛ Apple Filing Protocol removed from macOS Golden Gate
Beginning with OS X Mavericks 10.9, Apple started transitioning file services to using Server Message Block (SMB) in place of AFP for both hosting file services and connecting to them from a Mac, but connecting to AFP file services continued to work in Mavericks and later versions of OS X and macOS. However, Apple signaled that AFP was completely on its way out when they included a note for macOS Sequoia 15.5 in the What’s new for enterprise in macOS Sequoia release notes that AFP was deprecated and would be removed in a future version of macOS.

I went with uppercase MTWRFSU for odd weeks and lowercase mtwrfsu of even weeks. Then I used the ISO week number that corresponds to the entire week being fully contained on that line. So for 2026 that means fields are labeled “RFSUmtwrfsuMTW” across and the weeks are numbered going 2, 4, 6, 8 etc down. The “ABCD etc” vertical lettering is the same every year since the Arvelie calendar doesn’t change year over year, but the weekday label and week number does change. (I looked it up with the help of the monthly spreads at the start of the book. For example in 2027 the first Monday in week 1 starts with January fourth. In 2026, the first full week is week 2 which starts with a lowercase m on January fifth.) For 2027, the fields are labeled “fsuMTWRFSUmtwr” across and the week numbers down go 1, 3, 5 etc. Like this: [...]
