Photos is a new(ish) image viewer and organiser for KDE Plasma aiming to give Gwenview a run for its pixels. GNU/Linux distributions that use KDE Plasma typically ship Gwenview, which has been the KDE image app for over 25 years. It’s a solid, feature-filled and Qt-based tool that and many love and rely on to view, manage and edit images. But development on Gwenview has slowed – and its legacy could be to blame. As GNOME found during efforts to modernise the Evince document viewer, updating old software can require rewriting and rewiring large chunks of an antiquated codebase.

Harmonicon Weekly Update: any harp, any file
This is a weekly update, which means I did a week of things and now I’m going to tell you about them, and I should say up front that most of the week went on two problems that sound small when you write them down. You had to own the exact harmonica a chart was written for. And the chart had to be in my file format, the one I invented, the one nobody else has ever written anything in.
