  After a year of work, hundreds of commits, 5 generations of pull requests, dozens of tests, rewriting part of Anubis in Rust, the first compiler bug of my career, and at least three times making my tower run out of ram I think I have finally done it.   Earlier this year I noticed my Artemis reader page (the page that lists posts published by sites to which I am subscribed) was loading slowly. The logic to generate the page encompasses several hundred lines of code, which do everything from retrieving posts from the database to formatting dates and entry titles. I had a feeling that the database queries may need to be optimised, but I knew that I needed more information to help me figure out what was going wrong.

  • OMG Ubuntu ☛ Firefox redesign will arrive in v157 release

    Firefox’s new ‘Nova’ redesign will be enabled for all users in Firefox 157, due the end of September – barring any last minute hiccups, of course. Mozilla’s engineers have been working on Nova since March. The original pitch was for rounded UI elements, floating toolbars, framed web content no longer flush with the edges of the browser window and, more strikingly, a lot of pastel gradients.
