Local Hosting Versus "the Cloud" (Hype)

7 years ago we traveled to Berlin to see pandas while the site's hosting nearly got transitioned - a job completed only about a week later. The migration was a bit stressful, as there was a lot that could go wrong (DNS, files lost in transfer, compatibility problems and so on), and that reminded me of the stress associated with moving homes. Thankfully we've not moved homes in a very long time, well over a decade already.
Hosting one's site locally is important, as noted here last night. There are many pros and hardly any cons, yet many people get tricked or manipulated by hype. They're led to think they need "the cloud" because it is "cheaper" or "more reliable" (it is neither) and the so-called 'cloud' typically means Google, Amazon, and Microsoft (GAFAM). It's all about surveillance, if not at the "GAFAM layer", then the CDN (commonly Clownflare these days).
Controlling one's hosting or having some form of "sovereignty" is extremely important. Many people don't realise this until there is downtime, data loss and so on.
SUSE wrote about this days ago when an executive over there explained: "This will definitely be the case at this week’s Summit between the French and German governments, where digital sovereignty takes center stage. Now is the moment to collectively answer the question – how can Europe become sovereign? It will take time, but we are seeing some of the most powerful voices on the continent get involved now on this issue." █
