Ivan ☛ The state of European cloud providers in 2026
Recently I went on the hunt for a new server provider for my personal use. I have been getting on quite well with an old laptop shoved into my utility closet and Tailscale for some years now, but now there are some things I would like to be accessible outside my VPN.
With the situation outside looking like it does, I figured it would be prudent to look for an European cloud provider. Plus, it is always nice to support the home team. The EU has been very loudly proclaiming the need for a “sovereign cloud” for quite some time now, so it will be interesting to see what progress has been made here.

University of Toronto ☛ Always remember to restart daemons and programs after changes
Today I got a useful reminder about how you should always restart programs and daemons after changes, or at the very least explicitly check to make sure that they've picked up changes you recently made. This lesson came in the form of a couple of hours of downtime for Wandering Thoughts, where it (mostly) responded with HTTP 500s between 08:38 and 10:53 today. I didn't make the change that triggered this at 08:38 or any time immediately before then; I made the change late last night.
