UNIXdigest ☛ With "AI" coding the future of software development looks more grim than ever before!
Previously, before the "AI" chaos arose, the modern software industry was already in pretty bad shape. Due to the almost frantic usage of too many levels of abstractions, and due to the incomprehensible lack of courage to think independently and the lack of push back against the blind following of hype and trends, many developers only had a superficial understanding of the technology they were working on.
With "AI" this problem is now getting much worse.

University of Toronto ☛ My views on manual pages and usage messages for local scripts and tools
So my overall view is that embedding simple documentation in your local programs and stopping there is both more resilient and less work, making it more likely to happen reliably. It also degrades much more gradually than manual pages do; you can write a bit of a usage message or a help message in a way that you can't write and install a little bit of a manual page. If you have a local culture where you maintain expertise in writing and managing manual pages and you reliably spend the time to do so, this is great, but I think it's likely to be hard to develop and sustain such a culture. And you might want to spend that documentation time on things and forms other than manual pages for local tools, if your local tools can get by with quick, basic usage stuff.

Marius Bancila ☛ Composite objects and C++26 the std::polymorphic type
In a previous article, I discussed the C++ std::indirect type and how it helps implementing the PImpl idiom. However, the std::indirect type was inducted in the standard alongside another type called std::polymorphic. This helps implementing composite classes, where composite means a class composed of member objects in an has-a relation, where the composite own the components which are part of its values. Examples include strategy objects, AST/expression-tree nodes, shapes-style hierarchies, plugin-configured behavior – and you want the owning class to remain a regular, copyable value. In this article, we’ll look at how std::polymorphic can be used for this purpose.

Thierry Moudiki ☛ Choosing the size of the calibration set in conformal prediction with ahead::conformalize()
In version 0.39.0 of the ahead package, the conformalize() function has been updated to include a new parameter called split_prob. This parameter allows users to specify the proportion of the data that should be used for calibration when constructing conformal prediction intervals.

A new release of the Pi4J Drivers library is available! Version 1.2.0 is a big step forward for anyone who wants to connect hardware components to a Raspberry Pi and control them with Java, without having to write the low-level I2C, SPI, or GPIO code yourself. The full announcement is on the Pi4J blog, here are the highlights.
