Linux Mint 21.3 “EDGE” ISO Released with Linux Kernel 6.5
Linux Mint 21.3 “Virginia” was released earlier this month on January 10th based on the Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish) operating system series and powered by the long-term supported Linux 5.15 LTS kernel, which is also used as the default kernel in the initial upstream release.
The “EDGE” variant of Linux Mint 21.3 ships with a newer kernel, namely Linux kernel 6.5, which will be included in the upcoming Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS point release by default, due on February 22nd, 2024.

Edge ISO available for Linux Mint 21.3
This is a quick announcement to let you know an “Edge” ISO image is now available for Linux Mint 21.3.
This image is made for people whose hardware is too new to boot the 5.15 LTS kernel included in Linux Mint 21.x. It ships with kernel 6.5 instead.

Linux Mint 21.3 Edge ISO Is Available for Download
Before we begin, it’s a good idea to clarify that this is not a new version of the beloved Linux Mint. Instead, it’s a special release designed for particular use cases. Here’s what it’s all about.
As we informed you, Linux Mint, one of the best desktop-oriented distributions, recently released its highly anticipated new Linux Mint 21.3 “Virginia.”
But what if you’ve recently purchased a laptop or PC with such new and modern hardware that when you try installing Linux Mint, the operating system (kernel) fails to recognize it? This is where the Linux Mint Edge comes to the rescue.

Linux Mint 21.3 Edge, with newer hardware support, released for download
Earlier this month, the team behind Linux Mint released Linux Mint 21.3 for download after about one month of beta testing. Unfortunately, it included an older Long Term Support kernel which doesn’t support some newer hardware; the new Edge ISO should overcome this problem.
The main Mint release includes Linux 5.15 but the new Edge edition includes Linux 6.5. Linux 5.15 has been available since October 2021, while it has received security patches since, added hardware support has not been added, therefore, people with newer hardware need to run a newer kernel like the one offered in Edge.

Linux Mint 21.3 'Virginia' gets an 'Edge' ISO for new hardware compatibility
In a recent announcement by developer Clement Lefebvre (aka Clem), Linux Mint has released an "Edge" ISO image for its 21.3 “Virginia” version. This update targets users with newer hardware that may not be compatible with the 5.15 LTS kernel included in the standard Linux Mint 21.x series. The Edge ISO addresses this issue by instead featuring the newer kernel 6.5.
This release aims to enhance the compatibility of Linux Mint with the latest hardware, potentially broadening its user base. For those interested in learning more about the Edge ISO and its features, further information is available on the Linux Mint User Guide.

Top Linux distros drop fresh beats
Three of the most highly regarded Linux distros around have put out new releases.
As most Linux distro vendors have no telemetry, and most Linuxes don't "phone home," nobody has any solid numbers on how many copies of any distro are in use. Vendors certainly track downloads and update requests, but seldom publish the results.
One consequence of this is that the page hit counter on the leading comparison site, Distrowatch, is one of the few publicly-available ways to estimate relative popularity. According to that, Linux Mint and MX Linux are the top two, as they were for 2023 as a whole.
Back in December we reported that the latest Linux Mint and Zorin OS were both in beta. Zorin got there first and released version 17 soon afterwards. Mint, this time, hit some issues and took a little longer, but Mint 21.3 shipped earlier this month. Now, it has an even fresher sibling, the latest Edge edition.

Linux Mint 21.3 Edge-ISO with Linux kernel 6.5 released for download
Linux Mint is the second most popular Linux distribution on Distrowatch, but it comes with the older Linux kernel 5.15 LTS ("long-term support") as the default version. This is due to the equally older base distribution Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, on which the current Linux Mint 21.3 "Viginia" is still based. As in the past, the Linux Mint developers also provide an "Edge" ISO file of the Cinnamon edition with the latest kernel for newer hardware for Mint 21.3.

What’s new in Linux Mint 21.3 ‘Virginia’
Linux Mint always follows its Ubuntu base (LTS with long-term support) after some delay. Version 21.3 has just brought its system base up to the level of Ubuntu 22.04.3, i.e. the third update of the Ubuntu LTS version 22.04.
While Ubuntu automatically installs such point releases as part of the update management, the extremely conservative Linux Mint interprets this as a version step that user must actively request, or you’ll otherwise remain with the previous minor version.
