Justice Served: GNU/Linux at 15% in India (Up Again in 2024)
THE "year of GNU/Linux" on the desktop (or laptop) isn't some future event. For many, e.g. Chromebook users, it has been "Linux" (with Google malware) for over a decade already. Same for EEE PC users around 15 years ago.
With half a month now gone, let's examine how GNU/Linux is doing in India, based on statCounter:
India is now the world's largest population. This is a big deal. Many skilled engineers come from India or are born in India. How many will grow up with UNIX/BSD/GNU/Linux?
See the above trend.
This was not an error or a mistake by statCounter; it seems like the curve remains quite consistent, so something is truly happening there. statCounter is just one of the very few who keep abreast of that and do a per-counter breakdown. At least in the public domain (without excessive paywalls).
What matters is the general trend. In just a number of years GNU/Linux grew from 1% to 4%. 2 decades ago GNU/Linux user 'chipped in' to put the brand "Linux" on NASCAR vehicles (before the Linux Foundation hijacked and diluted/ruined the brand for GPL violators). █
