A 29-year-old man in Ukraine was arrested this week for using hacked accounts to create 1 million virtual servers used to mine $2 million in cryptocurrency.
As announced today by Europol, the suspect is believed to be the mastermind behind a large-scale cryptojacking scheme that involves hijacking cloud computing resources for crypto-mining.
By using the computing resources of others’ servers to mine cryptocurrency, the cybercriminals can profit at the expense of the compromised organizations, whose CPU and GPU performance is degraded by the mining.

Recovered from Silvano were 11 cell phones, seven flash drives, five laptops, four SD cards, three Wi-Fi routers, two hard drives, a desktop and a modem.
Apart from these, police also confiscated several financial documents pertaining to land titles and vehicle purchases. These documents contain personal and bank account information belonging to other people, police said.

Labor has admitted it suffered Australia’s largest-ever government data breach, with key intelligence, defence and economic departments falling victim after millions of files were stolen from Australia’s largest commercial law firm.
After months of questioning, officials finally revealed late last year that 62 government departments including Australia Post, the Departments of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Treasury, Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Home Affairs, and the Tax Office, were all affected by the cyber attack on HWL Ebsworth.

The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) has fallen victim to cyber extortion, Finnish news agency STT reports on Sunday.
The Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church is one of the largest members of the LWF, a global Lutheran organisation.
Earlier this month perpetrators carried out ransomware attacks on the federation and released screenshots of the captured material, including images of people’s passports.
