Fedora Asahi Remix Announced as the Flagship Distro for Apple Silicon
Fedora Project is holding these days the Flock To Fedora annual contributor-focused conference and among various other news, the Asahi Linux Project unveiled their flagship distribution based on Fedora Linux, aiming for a final release at the end of August 2023.
As you may know, if you ever wanted to install Linux on an Apple computer, the Asahi Linux project’s goal was always to bring full Linux support to Apple Silicon (e.g. Apple M1, Apple M2, etc.) for all GNU/Linux distributions, mainly focusing their work on the kernel and bootloaders.

Coming soon: Fedora for Apple Silicon Macs!
Today at Flock, we announced that Fedora Linux will soon be available on Apple Silicon Macs. Developed in close collaboration with the Fedora Asahi SIG and the Asahi Linux project, the Fedora Asahi Remix will provide a polished experience for Workstation and Server usecases on Apple Silicon systems. The Asahi Linux project has also announced that the new Asahi Linux flagship distribution will be Fedora Asahi Remix.
We are using a Remix as opposed to delivering this support in Fedora Linux proper because this ecosystem is still very fast moving and we believe a Remix will offer the best user experience for the time being. Also, the Remix will allow us to integrate hardware support as it becomes available. Nonetheless, as much of this work as possible is being conducted upstream, with several key components being developed, maintained and packaged in Fedora Linux upstream. Ultimately, we expect Apple Silicon support to be integrated in Fedora Workstation and Fedora Server in a future release, and are working towards this goal. This approach is in line with the overarching goal of the Asahi project itself to integrate support for these systems in the relevant upstream projects.

Fedora Asahi Remix aims to bring a polished Linux experience to Macs with Apple Silicon
It used to be pretty easy to install a non-Apple operating system on Apple’s laptops and desktops. When the company was still selling Macs with Intel processors it even offered Boot Camp software that made it easy to dual-boot macOS and Windows (or other operating systems) on the same device.
Since moving to Apple Silicon (which is what the company calls the ARM-based chips it designs in house), it’s gotten a lot tougher to run alternate operating systems. But the folks at the Asahi Linux project have been working to port Linux to Apple Silicon for the past few years. And while it’s still very much a work in progress, the developers have now just announced their new flagship Linux distribution for Macs: Fedora Asahi Remix. The first official release could come by the end of August, 2023.

Fedora Linux comes to Apple Silicon Mac computers
In a fascinating turn of events at the Flock conference today, it was announced that Fedora Linux is set to be made available on Apple Silicon Mac computers. This development is the result of a close collaboration with the Fedora Asahi Special Interest Group (SIG) and the Asahi Linux project.
The outcome, known as Fedora Asahi Remix, promises to deliver an optimized experience for both Workstation and Server use-cases on Apple Silicon machines. The Asahi Linux project has further revealed that the Fedora Asahi Remix will serve as its new flagship distribution.

Our new flagship distro: Fedora Asahi Remix - Asahi Linux
You’ve all been waiting for it, many of you have guessed, and now, as announced at Flock To Fedora, it’s time to make it official:
The new Asahi Linux flagship distribution will be Fedora Asahi Remix!
We’re confident that this new flagship will get us much closer to our goal of a polished Linux experience on Apple Silicon, and we hope you will enjoy using it as much as we’re enjoying working on it.
We’re still working out the kinks and making things even better, so we are not quite ready to call this a release yet. We aim to officially release the Fedora Asahi Remix by the end of August 2023. Look forward to many new features, machine support, and more!

Apple Silicon Linux Support Levels Up with Fedora Asahi Remix
Later this month their own, new flagship distro will be released based on Fedora. They say Fedora Asahi Remix (to give it its official name) will bring them “closer to [the] goal of a polished Linux experience on Apple Silicon”.
However, the announcement of this distro will not detract from or dilute down the broader aim of the Asahi project – which is to bring full Linux support to Apple Silicon machines regardless of distribution.

Fedora Partners With Asahi to Port Linux to Apple’s Arm Silicon
Red Hat’s community Linux distribution, Fedora, and Asahi Linux, a project that’s been working to develop a reverse engineered port for running Linux on hardware using Apple’s Arm-based silicon, announced on Wednesday that they’ve developed a working relationship, and that going forward Asahi’s flagship distribution will be called Fedora Asahi Remix.
That’s a change from the Asahi Arch Linux ARM Remix, which has been Asahi’s flagship distro for the last year or so.

Asahi Linux’s new “flagship” distro for M-series Macs is a Fedora Remix
Asahi Linux, the project aiming to bring a fully functional Linux system to Apple computers running on that company's own M-series chips, has announced that its new "flagship distro" is Fedora Asahi Remix.
As announced at Fedora's Flock conference this week in Cork, Ireland, (and on Asahi Linux's blog), the Fedora Asahi Remix should be officially released by the end of August 2023. You can try it out now, but you should "expect rough spots (or even complete breakage)."
The new distro will be "upstream-first," sending as many of its bespoke M-series tools back to Fedora's mainline offerings as possible. Hector Martin, writing on Asahi Linux's blog, notes that the existing project based on Arch Linux was "fully downstream." Asahi added its own package repository with scripts, forked kernel and Mesa packages, bootloader parts, and userspace support, but with "no significant involvement with upstream Arch Linux ARM or Arch Linux." Neal Gompa from Fedora reached out to talk about integrating Asahi with Fedora after the project's debut, and work began in late 2021. Now it's ready to spread a bit further.

Asahi Linux project hooks up with Fedora: Remix that's not a remix coming soon
The Asahi Linux project, which is working on getting Linux working on Apple Silicon-based Macs, is partnering with the Fedora Project for its new flagship distro.
The team behind Asahi Linux has announced its first official flagship distro: the Fedora Asahi Remix. Although the name sounds like one, Asahi Linux isn't a distro: it's the project which is porting the Linux kernel to Apple Silicon Macs, meaning Apple laptops and desktops based around the M1 and M2 family of Arm64-instruction-set SOCs.
