Sneak Peek at PCLOS pre-9

Pre9 is expected out any day now and Tuxmachines was privy to a sneak peak at what's new and exciting. Most obvious to the nekked eye is more eye candy. A distro known far and wide for its beauty, PCLOS has topped itself once again.


Featuring kde 3.4.1, Kernel 2.6.11, Unionsfs enabled to provide read write ability to cdrom, they never rest on their laurels. What I found was a fast, exciting, beautiful system. I know folks are quite anxious for this release, and who can blame them. However, it's still not quite ready. Tex says, "This isnt final, got a few bugs to work out." When asked what bugs, Tex replies, "Some duplicate icons on the desktop for camera, they want usbkey to show when plugged in and some other cosmetics."

Updated graphics, many thanks to jrangels, run rampant in this release. PCLOS is without reservation the most beautiful default os/desktop one can find. For example the new beautiful splash screen that compliments the entire theme.

PCLinuxOS Control Center has been revamped as well with added features and updated icons. Just gorgeous. One can find on the desktop icons leading to the much desired and now included man pages. as well as the irc chat channel and the newly formed PCLOS wiki pages. Some old favorites are still present as well such as the synaptic package manager and hdinstaller.

Tex isn't sure when this release will go gold and be announced. Please don't email and ask. Tex has become reluctant to grant Tuxmachines and its readers any preliminary information for the onslaught of emails that usually follow. As in all Linux projects: it'll be ready when it's ready!

* Added nolapic to livecd-install and mklivecd syslinux.cfg

* Turned off klaptop on taskbar in livecd and hd install

* Added wiki.desktop file to /etc/skel/Desktop so it shows for new user

* Turned off show kamera on desktop and changed dynamic scripts to launch digikam (needs to be tested)

* Turned off show hd on desktop and added My Computer to root/guest and to /etc/skel for new user creation. Left removable media such as usbkey, floppy, zip and cds to pop on desktop when plugged in or cd inserted in drives.

* Added missing man pages

* ran slocate -u and updatedb on pclinuxos p9 build partition

Todo check on gstreamer, kscd.

PCLinuxOS

PCLinuxOS is a bootable LIVECD that allows you to run straight from the cd without installing anything on your computer. You also have the option to use a usb key to save user data. In addition, if PCLinuxOS works well with your hardware and you like it, you can also install it to your hard drive.

PCLinuxOS Preview 4 was initally based on Linux Mandrake 9.2. PCLinuxOS Preview 5,6,7,8 and 9 have been built against the prior PCLinuxOS release. Thank you Mandriva for giving us a good base to work upon.

Preview 9 features Kernel 2.6.11-oci11 which has been patched and tested to work well with KDE 3.4.1. KDE 3.4.1 utilizes the Hal/dbus backend for autmounting removable media such as usbkeys, cdroms, cameras, scanners and other perpherials. We have tried to provide you with a complete out of box working experience.

Should you run into any problems with PCLinuxOS, help is just a click away using our IRC chat channel.

I've always said Linux doesnt have to be ugly and Jrangels came to our rescue by providing a custom iconset for the Control Center, stunning backgrounds and a fresh kdm theme. I hope you enjoy all the eye candy.

We are in the process of putting the final cosmetic changes to pclos and we do hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoy bringing it to you.

It's true that the official liveCD is English only. However, once installed, kde i18n packages along with locale packages are now available for most languages. With a little bit of effort you could easily re-master CDs with whatever language support you want.

Besides what Fritzed already mentioned, there were considerable support put in to internationalize the mklivecd and the livecd-install script.
P9 is comming with theese scripts and one of our testers already reported: Wooha the installer actually speaks italian!
Sorry I don't know about czech, but I know, there is a hungarian nationalization project underway besides the already existing it,de,fr,tr and vn
