Highlights of the Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS release include a GNOME 42-based COSMIC UI, unchanged from the previous Pop!_OS 21.10 release, support for scheduling automatic updates for Debian, Flatpak, and Nix packages in the “OS Upgrade & Recovery” panel in Settings, a new System76 Scheduler that optimizes the performance of the OS by directing resources to the window in focus for a much smoother experience, as well as PipeWire as the default audio processing system.

    The next LTS upgrade for Pop!_OS is finally here.

    Pop!_OS 22.04 is based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with Linux Kernel 5.16.19 at the time of launch.

    Let us take a brief look at what it has to offer.

  • Linux distro Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS from System76 is out now

    System76 has today released the latest version of their own Linux distribution, with Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS.

    The basics are that they've rebased on top of Ubuntu 22.04 for their packaging, with it being an LTS it's supported for 5 years with updates. Also included is the more up to date Linux Kernel 5.16.19 at release (and they do regular updates), Mesa 22 drivers and GNOME 42 with their COSMIC interface. Plenty more tweaks are included with this release too, so here's a quick run-down.

    System76 has made Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS available to download.

    The latest version of the flagship Linux distro from this US-based computer vendor is based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. It inherits much of that release’s foundations, including the lift to GNOME 42, but adds its own ‘Cosmic’ desktop experience and other embellishments.

    In this post we detail what’s new in Pop OS 22.04, show you some screenshots of its (starry) new look, and provide a link to download Pop OS 22.04 so you can try it out for yourself (and no: you don’t need to own a System76 laptop or desktop to use it).

  • Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS has landed!

    Update and upgrade Pop!_OS automatically from the OS Upgrade & Recovery panel in Settings! Minimize interruption by scheduling what day & time that you want your computer to perform the updates. Scheduled automatic updates include support for Debian, Flatpak, and Nix packages.

    To reduce distractions, notifications for available updates are set to show weekly by default. The frequency can also be set to daily or monthly notifications. Notifications won’t show if you have automatic updates enabled. Automatic updates are turned off by default.

    System76 has officially released the latest iteration of Pop!_OS. This time around, the operating system is based on Ubuntu 22.04 and includes plenty of improvements. Although the changes found in 22.04 aren't nearly as dramatic as those in past releases, this new version still offers plenty to get excited about.

    The Pop!_OS COSMIC desktop is based on GNOME 42, but has been stripped down to align with the vision System76 has with its desktop. This means the look and feel of the desktop will remain fairly consistent with what you experienced since COSMIC was first introduced. In fact, although GNOME 42 migrated away from Gedit and GNOME Terminal, Pop!_OS is sticking with those two apps for the time being.

    Canonical just released Ubuntu Linux 22.04 last week, with a slew of new features and an extended support period of five years. Pop!_OS, one of the more popular desktop Linux distributions based on Ubuntu, has now released an update with the new Ubuntu version as the foundation.

    Pop!_OS is based on Ubuntu and uses many of Ubuntu’s packages and default applications, but with a customized version of the Gnome desktop environment that System76 calls ‘Cosmic’. There are a few other changes too, like built-in drivers for Nvidia graphics cards (if you install using the Nvidia PC installer) and a custom app store.

    US Linux boxshifter System76 has released the new LTS version, 22.04, of its custom Ubuntu remix, Pop!_OS (or "Pop" for short). The Reg FOSS desk took it for a spin.

    There are, as we mentioned recently, a lot of Ubuntu remixes out there. Some are official, some unofficial; some track every release, and some only the Long Term Support (LTS) versions. This means that every time a new Ubuntu LTS release appears, a host of other distros follow close behind. System76 is a little different from other distro remixes, though.

    System76's primary business is selling laptops, desktops, and servers specifically built to run Linux. We covered a little of the company's history when we looked at Pop!_OS 21.10 last year. Back in 2017, it decided to do its own custom version of Ubuntu – and in a move that's won it both publicity and popularity, it makes the remix available to everyone, not just its customers.

    Pop! OS 22.04 “LTS” has been released, bringing with it a slew of new features and optimizations. Pop! OS is an Ubuntu-based operating system built and managed by System76, a Denver-based company that creates open-source hardware, software, and firmware.

    Pop! OS has the same release cycle as Ubuntu, with a new version every six months. With each release, the corporation makes minor adjustments to the system to improve it, such as upgrading the system core to the most recent version of Ubuntu, the desktop environment, and so on.

    At some point, System76 will release a version of Pop!_OS that is a thing of its own, wholly separate from the desktop it was based on … GNOME. Although Pop!_OS 22.04 isn’t that release, you can see the underpinnings of what’s to come with even more subtle shifts away from that which makes GNOME, well, GNOME.
