Hello, Community! AlmaLinux OS is proud to announce AlmaLinux OS 9.0 Beta for all 4 architectures: x86_64, aarch64, ppc64le and s390x, achieving architecture parity with upstream.

As this is a BETA release it should not be used for production installations. The provided upgrade instructions should not be used on production machines unless you don't mind if something breaks. Now if you wanna test this somehow, somewhere to see how things will work in 9.0 stable, you're on the right track.

    AlmaLinux, the popular enterprise Linux distro, has just announced its 9.0 Beta release to keep up with the upstream, i.e. RHEL 9.

    Just to give you some context, AlmaLinux was introduced in the early 2021 to replace the then recently discontinued CentOS. One of its main goals was to be a drop-in replacement for RHEL, specifically needing to be 100% binary compatible.

    Not to forget, AlmaLinux is free, making it one of the best RHEL alternatives.

  • AlmaLinux 9.0 Beta Released – Testers Needed

    On Tuesday, AlmaLinux announced in a blog the beta release of AlmaLinux OS 9.0, based on the upcoming release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9, which is expected to see its production ready official release in May. The official AlmaLinux 9.0 will be released shortly after the RHEL release.

    The new AlmaLinux adds support for IBM Z systems alongside its existing support of x86 64, ARM 64, and POWER, which means it now supports all four of the architectures supported by RHEL. The project said that cloud images and containers are still in process, but that they anticipate the first batch to be ready in the next day or so.

    AlmaLinux has released a beta for version 9 of its eponymous Linux distribution aimed at RHEL refuseniks still reeling from the dumping of CentOS by Red Hat.

    The beta was released last night for x86_64, aarch64, ppc64le, and s390x architectures, "achieving architecture parity with upstream," according to the team.

    The beta of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 9 turned up in November 2021 and so here we are with AlmaLinux OS 9 beta, codenamed Emerald Puma. A stated goal of AlmaLinux is 1:1 binary compatibility with RHEL, filling the gap left by Red Hat's discontinuation of CentOS in favor of CentOS Stream.

    AlmaLinux is a Linux distribution that is 1:1 binary compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux. That means it’s perfectly at home as an enterprise server operating system capable of handling anything you can throw at it. This server-centric operating system was first released in 2021 as a drop-in replacement for CentOS and would serve as an alternative to RHEL.

    With RHEL 9 releasing in May, it should come as no surprise that AlmaLinux 9 will follow in its footsteps. Although there is no official release date for the next iteration of AlmaLinux, what we do know is that the beta has finally arrived and although it’s not a major departure from what was offered in AlmaLinux 8, there’s certainly enough to garner a bit of excitement about this next release.

    Since its inception, AlmaLinux has very quickly risen to become one of the best drop-in replacements for both CentOS Stream and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Of course, being based on RHEL, AlmaLinux benefits from a fairly high bar set by the Red Hat pedigree. And although on the surface there aren’t any user-facing features that will blow anyone’s mind out of the Linux water, AlmaLinux 9 still manages to seriously impress … even as a beta.
