    As the first point release issued since the release of Zorin OS 16 back in august of last year Zorin OS 16.1 is “packed with improvements to help users work better, updates to apps and system-level software, and support for new hardware.”

    Chief among the updates is LibreOffice 7.3. This is the latest version of the popular open source office suite and it boasts improved compatibility with and faster opening of Microsoft Office files, a better dark mode, and a slate of smaller tweaks aimed at improving functionality and performance.

    Zorin 16.1 has arrived, marking the first major update of the Linux distribution since August's release.

    Unashamedly user-friendly, with an interface unlikely to scare off Windows or Mac users, the most eye-catching element of the update is LibreOffice 7.3, replete with better Microsoft Office compatibility, improved performance, and tweaks for dark mode fans.

    Based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, the distribution also has improved hardware support. Handy for those with pockets deep enough for an Nvidia RTX 3050 or Apple Magic Mouse 2. 12th-generation Intel Core chips are also on the list as well as a range of printers and that bête noir of the Linux world: audio hardware. It being Ubuntu, the 5.13 Linux kernel is lurking under the hood.

    It's undoubted a nice thing to look at, certainly for users making their first tentative steps away the worlds of Apple and Microsoft, although as with our look at Zorin 16 last year, you will need to pay up if you want access to desktop interfaces styled on Windows and macOS, and what Zorin calls a "professional-grade suite of apps," "advanced productivity software," and access to installation support.

  • Zorin OS 16.1 Released with a New Kernel For Better Hardware Compatibility

    The developers of Zorin OS have released the latest version of their beautiful desktop Linux OS.

    Zorin OS 16 was only released seven months ago and yet the developers have been busy at work to bring the first point release for the desktop distribution. The biggest change to the operating system is the inclusion of the 5.13 kernel. However, that kernel is not patched against the Dirty Pipe vulnerability. However, immediately upon installation, an update will patch the kernel, so you’re desktop isn’t in danger of falling prey to this nasty bug.

    The 5.13 kernel brings better hardware compatibility for newer hardware (such as NVIDIA RTX 3050 GPUs, 12th Generation Intel Core processors, Sony PlayStation 5 DualSense controllers, the Framework laptop, and Apple’s Magic Mouse 2).
