EasyOS version 3.1.13 released

Version 3.1.13 does not have SeaMonkey, instead has BlueGriffon HTML editor and Balsa email client. Let me know how they go. If any problems, they can be changed. I am planning to create Claws and Sylpheed email client PETs for comparison, as Balsa spam filtering seems a bit weak.

I received an email that samba is still broken in 3.1.11. I didn't get time to check that one. So that is something we need to look at.

I tested booting up in RAM (& optionally disable drives). Works fine, there is one error message during bootup about a missing file, but that doesn't matter.

Getting closer to the next major release, that will be 3.2.

  • EasyOS: Why ISO was retired

    Some time ago I stopped releasing EasyOS as an ISO file, from then onward as a drive image file only. This has been contentious, and I receive emails from people lamenting the demise of the ISO. So, I should post some thoughts why I made this decision. Not an exhaustive rationale, just some thoughts while I think of them right now...

    The ISO9660 file format is very old, going right back to 1988, and has since then had enhancements bolted on, see the Wikipedia ISO9660 page. In addition, there is the "hybrid ISO", enabling booting from a USB-stick, and on top of that enhancements to enable booting from either or both legacy-BIOS and UEFI firmware computers, see here.
    What all of the above means is that ISO files are a "dogs breakfast", a hodge podge of changes bolted on over the years.
    A Linux distribution provided on a drive image file, in comparison, is very simple. And, very simple to setup to boot on either or both legacy-BIOS and UEFI computers.
    Given that optical drives are rapidly receeding into history, and these days we boot from either a USB-stick or install direct to a hard drive partition, what are the differences in doing that, ISO versus image file?

    A little personal note; having used Firefox for awhile, I am happy to be back on SeaMonkey. There were things that peeved me about FF. The menu button top-right, with the three horizontal bars, would sometimes freeze and become unusable -- which astounded me, that a product so mature could have such a fault. Why does it nearly always append "www" when I type in a URL? -- and defaults to "http://" at sites that accept "https://". Then there is the very slow startup on older computers. The buggy GPU hardware acceleration. That's enough criticism!

    It has been repeated so many times, not just in that forum thread, but elsewhere in the forum, that it is easier to extract vmlinuz, *.sfs and initrd files from an iso than it is from an img file.

    I have replied no, that is wrong. It is just as easy to open up an image file as it is an iso or sfs -- you just click on it. It is just a matter of implementing click-on-an-img file in the pups.

    It is theoretically possible to click on an .img.gz (compressed img file) and extract the contents without uncompressing it. However, in EasyOS I implemented the simpler way, which is one click to uncompress the file, another click to open it.

    With help from Alfons, some samba problems were fixed; however, still not working in Easy 3.1.15.

    If you click on the "share" icon on the desktop, then click the "Samba" checkbox, then click on the "Samba Setup" button, there is a "SAMBA OFF" red button -- click that, starts the samba daemon and the button becomes green and text in the button changes to "SAMBA ON".

    Someone posted recently to the forum that there are many blog posts about EasyOS that really should be mapped to some kind of wiki at easyos.org. Yes, I know about this problem; an informative blog post will fade away into obscurity as time goes on, people who don't regularly read the blog posts will not see it. I will attempt to improve the mapping of informative blog posts to easyos.org.
