Solus 4.3 Released with Linux Kernel 5.13, KDE Plasma 5.22, and GNOME 40.2

Coming more than five months after Solus 4.2, the Solus 4.3 release is the third installment in the Solus 4 “Fortitude” series, introducing updated internals for better hardware support, as well as updated desktop environments and apps for an improved Solus desktop experience.

Highlights of Solus 4.3 include the latest Linux 5.13 kernel series, the Mesa 21.1.3 graphics stack, BlueZ 5.60 Bluetooth stack, FFmpeg 4.4 and GStreamer 1.18.4 multimedia frameworks, dav1d 0.9.0 AV1 decoder, PulseAudio 14.2 sound system, LibreOffice 7.1.4 office suite, Mozilla Thunderbird 78.11 email client, and Mozilla Firefox 89.0.2 web browser.

    Solus have just released a new update to their Fortitude series of distributions bringing us up to version 4.3. Let’s take a quick look at what’s new.

    Targeted at desktop users, Solus is a fully-fledged, independent rolling release Linux distribution with its own desktop environment and repositories. It is a unique distribution in that it is written from scratch, meaning it is not derived from Debian, Ubuntu, Arch Linux or one of the other major distributions. Solus has it’s own package manager named EOPKG which makes it very easy to install software on Solus desktop.

    The Solus desktop environment is called Budgie. It is a great desktop that aims to provide sane defaults and a beautiful interface. Any GNOME user looking for something lighter would enjoy Budgie. The experience of using it is quite a bit like using GNOME with the Dash to Panel extension.

  • Solus 4.3 released with refreshed apps, desktop environments and new hardware support

    Solus, the independent Linux distribution with their own Budgie desktop has a big new release out with Solus 4.3.

    Coming hot off the code with the Linux Kernel 5.13.1, you can expect a fair bit more hardware support with this release including AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT, 6800, 6800 XT and 6900 XT cards, the Sony PS5 DualSense controller support, hardware monitoring for the NZXT Kraken X42/X52/X62/X72 all-in-one CPU liquid coolers and plenty more. It also brings in Mesa 21.1.3 with has improved gaming support, performance improvements and plenty of fixes too.

    There's a lot more that was upgraded too including Firefox 89.0.2, LibreOffice 7.1.4.2, Thunderbird 78.11.0, bluez 5.60 for better Bluetooth support, ffmpeg 4.4, Budgie 10.5.3, GNOME 40.2, MATE 1.24 and the Plasma Desktop 5.22.2.

  • Solus 4.3 Available for Download and Installation

    The latest iteration from the Solus developers is out with kernel 5.13 and plenty of new features, bug fixes, and new hardware support.

    Solus is the Linux distribution dedicated to the Budgie desktop. And this time around Budgie has received plenty of bug fixes and updates that add up to a much-improved performance and reliability. Those changes to the desktop environment also include new themes, window customizations, improved notifications, screen tracking, and more.

    But the big additions come by way of the Linux 5.13 kernel. By shipping with this new kernel, Solus introduces support for Apple’s M1 chipset, Intel’s Alder Lake S Graphics, AMD’s FreeSync/Adaptive-Sync, and a generic USB display driver. These additions mean Solus can run on even more hardware and will benefit from the performance gains offered by those chipsets and features.

On Linux handbook, we already have a guide on deploying Ghost with Docker in a reverse proxy setup. Instead of Ngnix reverse proxy, you can also use another software called Traefik with Docker. It is a popular open-source cloud-native application proxy, API Gateway, Edge-router, and more. I use Traefik to secure my websites using an SSL certificate obtained from Let's Encrypt. Once deployed, Traefik can automatically manage your certificates and their renewals. In this tutorial, I'll share the necessary steps for deploying a Ghost blog with Docker and Traefik.
