Ubuntu 21.04 Will Try To Use Wayland By Default

Ubuntu is going to be trying to switch over to using Wayland by default for the current Ubuntu 21.04 cycle to allow sufficient time for widespread testing and evaluation ahead of next year's Ubuntu 22.04 LTS release.

Canonical engineer Sebastien Bacher announced today they will be trying again for Ubuntu 21.04 to enable Wayland by default, four years after they originally tried but reverted back to using GNOME on X.Org for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and since that point. Ubuntu with GNOME Shell on Wayland has been available as a non-default choice but the hope is now in 2021 they are ready to comfortably switch to Wayland.

    Canonical’s Sebastien Bacher has announced that Ubuntu 21.04 will ship with the Wayland display server as the default, replacing X.Org. Bacher confirmed that NVIDIA users will still default to X.Org due to some on-going issues but the company hopes that these will be fully resolved by the time of the next Ubuntu LTS release in April 2022.

    If any of this sounds familiar, it’s because Canonical actually set Wayland as the default in Ubuntu 17.10 almost four years ago but found that the software was not ready to be released in the then-upcoming Ubuntu 18.04 LTS which would be used on production machines. Since then, other distributions have adopted Wayland and bugs have been worked out enough so that Canonical is ready to give it another shot.

    Ubuntu tried to use Wayland as the default display server in Ubuntu 17.10 and burned its hands. It looks like, Ubuntu is willing to try Wayland as default once more with Ubuntu 21.04 Hirsute Hippo.

    For those who are unware, a display server is an underlying utility that enables your operating system to have graphical capability.

    Linux distributions have been using the legacy Xorg display server for decades. There are a couple of new, next generation display servers and Wayland is one of them.

    To tackle these issues in 2008, another communication protocol was introduced called Wayland. This protocol serves between the display server and the client. Wayland also serves as window manager and display server that uses Wayland is also known as Wayland compositor.

    Since Wayland is termed superior and the latest protocol, we must be aware of the key differences between Wayland and X.

    Ubuntu introduced Wayland back in 2017 with its 17.10 release but then discontinued in 18.04 because of technical and compatibility issues.

    The Ubuntu developers unveiled that Ubuntu 21.04 has decided to switch towards the Wayland display server enabled by default. They are considering it over X because Wayland is a much more secure and modern protocol.
