NetBSD 11.0 Ships First Stable RISC-V Port and Ten-Millisecond Boot Kernel
The NetBSD Project shipped NetBSD 11.0 on August 1, 2026, delivering the first BSD operating system with an officially supported, stable 64-bit RISC-V port — completing a development cycle that spanned seven release candidates and more than eighteen months since the prior stable release, as announced by developer Martin Husemann on the project's official blog. The nineteenth major release of one of the oldest continuously developed open-source operating systems also debuts a kernel variant that boots a full virtual machine in roughly 10 milliseconds on 2020-era hardware, and adds twelve new Linux-compatible system calls that substantially expand the range of pre-built Linux binaries the system can run without modification.

NetBSD 11.0 released
The release of NetBSD 11.0, the 19th major version of the operating system, has been announced. There are many changes and enhancements since the 10.1 release, including a new port to RISC-V, better support for GNU/Linux system calls in compat_linux(), as well as improvements to the NPF firewall.
As you are probably aware, the number of security issues found or suspected everywhere has massively increased with the advent of AI tools. As a consequence, we can't publish a release without open issues. Instead of delaying the release further to fix them (new ones are being reported all the time), we've instead chosen to be transparent about this.
See the full release notes for links to the binary distributions and links to the full change logs.
