TUXEDO Aquaris Announced as First Water Cooling System for Linux Laptops

Earlier this year, when TUXEDO Computers unveiled the TUXEDO Stellaris 15 Gen4 Linux laptop, the hardware vendor also introduced the TUXEDO Aquaris external water cooling system, but at that time it was only supported on TUXEDO Computers’ laptops shipping with the Windows operating system pre-installed.

Of course, TUXEDO Computers promised that they will offer Linux support, and today the hardware vendor announced in-house developed Linux drivers for the TUXEDO Aquaris external water cooling system.

    Tuxedo may not be a household name for many of us, but it is one of the well-known suppliers of high-performance Linux-based laptops from Germany. Earlier this year, the company introduced its Stellaris 15 Gen4 notebook aimed at performance-demanding users with an optional external liquid-cooling system. To great surprise, Tuxedo only offered the machine with Windows, but this week the company finally began to offer it with Linux, reports Phoronix.

    The Tuxedo Stellaris 15 Gen4 is a very powerful desktop replacement gaming laptop designed by Clevo. It comes packing up to Intel's Intel Core i9-12900H processor mated with two DDR5 memory modules and two PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 SSDs as well as Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3080 Ti graphics chip. The machine uses a 15.6-inch display with a 2560x1440 resolution and 240Hz refresh rate to maximize the gaming experience.

What was announced today are the Linux drivers for the external water cooling system, which only worked on Winblows.

    “Aquaris supports the conventional air cooling of the notebook, resulting in significantly reduced surface and CPU and GPU temperatures and overall lower system fan noise. Alternatively, the additional cooling capacity can be invested in maximum CPU and GPU performance for rendering at record speeds,” the announcement states.

    The unit weighs 1.39 kg with dimensions of 203x75x186 mm and is designed mainly for stationary use at the desk. The Aquaris additionally offers three fan speeds with control through a graphical user interface.

    Computer chips are getting so hot these days, some companies are starting to put liquid cooling into laptops so that they can run faster — or quieter and less hot to the touch.

    Just look at Germany-based Tuxedo Computers, which released a 15-inch high-performance laptop earlier this year that supports an external liquid-cooling module. After initially running Windows, the Tuxedo Stellaris 15 – Gen4 now plays nice with Linux, the vendor recently announced.

    The laptop can be configured with some of the fastest CPUs out there, letting users choose between an Intel Core i7-12700H, Intel Core i9-12900H, or AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX. For GPU, the laptop supports a wider range of options, from Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3060 to the RTX 3080 Ti.

    Tuxedo's liquid-cooling module, called Aquaris, is offered as a €199 ($201 based on current exchange rates) add-on for the laptop, which varies in price based on configuration but starts at around €2,000 ($2,028) for the hardware.
