i.MX8 SoC Support Is Heading Into Linux 4.21 Along With Another ARM Platform
A few days back there was the main ARM pull request for Linux 4.21 with new SoC and board support. A second ARM pull request has been submitted now during the final moments of the 4.21 kernel merge window and it offers up some new features, most notably the initial i.MX8 SoC support.
Developers had been aiming the i.MX8 support for Linux 4.21 after it wasn't ready the past few cycles contrary to some old plans to get it in ~4.18. But now with the pull request sent in on Friday by Olof Johansson, the support is now in place.

Experimental Rockchip Video Codec Linux Driver Posted
There is an experimental Rockchip open-source video codec driver for accelerated video encode/decode posted for the Linux kernel but in its current form isn't suited for mainline inclusion.
Randy Li of the Rockchip Linux work posted this vendor video codec support as an initial design implementation for the kernel. The driver in its current form isn't geared for being merged but rather for comparing to the status of other Rockchip video codec driver work, helping with those working on V4L2 API improvements particularly around the request API, and other open-source assistance.

Linux Kernel Developers Discussing Generic RGB LED Interface
With the ever increasing usage of RGB LEDs on modern computer systems, Linux kernel developers have begun discussing a formal RGB LED user-space interface.
To date RGB LED interface controllers supported by Linux have often exposed separate red/green/blue interfaces to user-space as separate LEDs while now there is a new discussion taking place regarding generic RGB LED support.

A Smackerel of Opinion: Kernel commits with "Fixes" Tag (revisited)
Last year I wrote about kernel commits that are tagged with the "Fixes" tag. Kernel developers use the "Fixes" tag on a bug fix commit to reference an older commit that originally introduced the bug.

Too much disk IO on sda in RAID10 setup
I have a RAID10 setup with 4x 2 TB WD Red disks in my server. Although the setup works fairly well and has enough throughput there is one strange issue with that setup: /dev/sda has more utilzation/load than the other 3 disks.

Samsung, Red Hat to Work on Linux Drivers for Future Tech
The metaverse is expected to uproot system design as we know it, and Samsung is one of many hardware vendors re-imagining data center infrastructure in preparation for a parallel 3D world.
Samsung is working on new memory technologies that provide faster bandwidth inside hardware for data to travel between CPUs, storage and other computing resources. The company also announced it was partnering with Red Hat to ensure these technologies have Linux compatibility.
