As the upcoming release dubbed ‘Resolute Raccoon’, the monochromatic mascot naturally features its namesakes’ characteristic masked face and tail, albeit rendered in Ubuntu’s trademark geometric style. The tail is incorporated into a spiralling starburst.

Ubuntu 26.04 Resolute Raccoon's wallpaper has been revealed
Ubuntu Linux 26.04 LTS will be released in two months, marking the next Long Term Support version of the popular desktop Linux distribution. The update already had a nickname, Resolute Raccoon, but now its raccoon-themed wallpaper background has finally been revealed.
Each new update for Ubuntu Linux is named after an animal, going by alphabetical order. The last four releases were Noble Numbat, Oracular Oriole, Plucky Puffin, and Questing Quokka, each with animal-themed artwork as the default wallpaper background. The official wallpaper for Resolute Raccoon has now been unveiled, in both purple and monochrome versions.
Canonical said in a blog post, "While these curious little mammals aren’t known to use computers (yet) their knack for exploration and tinkering makes them natural members of the open source community. The codename ‘Resolute’, seems rather apt in capturing the creature and community’s shared determination and ability to press on in any circumstance. When you boot up Ubuntu 26.04 here in a few short weeks, don’t forget to embody that indelible raccoon spirit and remember that whatever your pursuit; be creative, be crafty and be resolute."

Ubuntu ☛ Unmasking the Resolute Raccoon
Codenames are a long standing tradition here at Canonical. Many of them have been chosen by Canonical CEO, Mark Shuttleworth, but some have been selected by engineers and other team members here. Resolute Raccoon was chosen by Steve Langasek (known as Vorlon to many) who passed away last January. Steve was a stalwart advocate for the open source movement and his work elevated Ubuntu and all the people who built it. Steve was determined, focused, driven, and resolute. It’s quite fitting that the codename he chose so perfectly captured his essence.

Just a few days after the wallpaper competition, Ubuntu Artwork team updated the wallpapers package (through proposed repository) for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, revealing the default wallpapers.
As previous releases, the new default wallpaper is a purple background with mascot (raccoon this time) in center. Instead of using straight origami lines, the new wallpaper uses curved-crease origami in background which looks great.
