Slackware-Based PorteuX 1.7 Launches with Linux 6.11, GNOME 47.1, and More
Powered by the latest and greatest Linux 6.11 kernel series, PorteuX 1.7 introduces significant changes compared to version 1.6 released at the end of August 2024, including the GNOME 47.1 and KDE Plasma 6.2.1 desktop environments, and experimental build scripts for System76’s Rust-based COSMIC desktop, as well as the upcoming Xfce 4.20 desktop environment.
The Xfce edition of PorteuX 1.7 features the stable Xfce 4.18 desktop environment by default and received a bunch of improvements, such as a fix for a ‘sticky keys’ notification issue, the ability to show file sizes in binary, support for tiling windows when dragging them to the edge of the screen, a fix to prevent extractors from creating invalid folders, and new delay to show or hide the panel to 10ms.

PorteuX Linux 1.7 released with smaller ISOs and performance optimizations
PorteuX 1.7 has been released, bringing various updates and optimizations to the lightweight Linux distribution. One of the key highlights of this release is the reduced size of the ISOs compared to previous versions, thanks to numerous optimizations that aim to enhance overall performance and stability.
Several fixes have been made, including addressing issues with the run-pipewire and gui-cheatcode-loader scripts, which previously ran indefinitely in the background. The release also resolves problems with LXDE freezing when dragging files from Engrampa over the file manager’s side panel and fixes a notification bug related to ‘sticky keys’ in Xfce 4.18.

Slackware-based PorteuX 1.7 portable Linux now available with a new kernel, smaller ISOs, updated desktops, and more
Not to be confused with Porteus, which is also based on Slackware, PorteuX is a portable Linux distro that aims to be lightweight, ultrafast, modular, and immutable (if needed). Inspired by Slax and Porteus, it comes with no less than 7 desktop choices, namely Cinnamon, GNOME, KDE Plasma, LXDE, LXQt, MATE, and Xfce. Now, version 1.7 brings the Linux kernel labeled 6.11.4, alongside updated desktops, apps, smaller ISO files, and several fixes.
While the KDE edition has slightly more than 500 MB in size (551 MB for KDE 6.2.1 and 502 MB for KDE 5.23.5), all the others stay below the 500 MB threshold. The most compact PorteuX 1.7 flavor to get is the one that uses LXDE 0.10.1, with just 431 MB in size. However, one should keep in mind that no web browsers, mail clients, or office suites are included. The list of packages includes glibc 2.40, gtk 4.16.3, gnome-shell 47.1, kmod 33, samba 4.21.1, wayland 1.23.1, qt 6.7.3, and Python 3.11.10. To keep the distro as light as possible, non-essential components included by most other distros, such as vim, were not included.

Gnome 47.1 Released with a Few Fixes » Linux Magazine
The latest release of the Gnome desktop was delayed for a week, but it has finally arrived with some fixes and improvements, without much in the way of game-changing features.
The primary focus of Gnome 47.1 is all about polish. The changes are quite minor but do make a difference. Included with the update is an improvement to the accuracy of box shadows, uneven padding, accent color support for tablets, better primary device detection, and a fix for the explicit sync feature for virtual monitors.
Epiphany (the Gnome browser) got some love as well: Bookmarks can be added to the incognito mode, tab navigation shortcuts can now be disabled, tooltips were added to the bookmarks tag rows, and several crashes have been addressed.
GVfs, Gnome's userspace virtual filesystem, also saw some attention in its handling of OneDrive, and Gnome Software now has improved Dynamic Kernel Module Support (DKMS) and Snap plugins.
