First Look at Serpent OS: Minimal GNOME Desktop and Rust-Based Package Manager
Four years ago I broke news that Ikey Doherty is making a new distro called Serpent Linux (it was later changed to Serpent OS) aiming to provide the Linux community with a truly modern distribution for people who want to just use Linux. The name of the distribution is inspired by the Serpent game created by Ikey Doherty.
At that time, Serpent OS was supposed to ship with the KDE Plasma desktop environment by default, but things have changed and GNOME was chosen as the default for the initial release. The first pre-alpha ISO image includes the older GNOME 45.3 release, but I’m sure the final release will use a more recent version.

Early Distro Look: Serpent OS Slithers Its Way Into Computers
In today's time when Linux distributions based on Debian, Fedora, and Arch are everywhere, it's a breath of fresh air when I come across independent distros that try to be different from the rest.
One such distro has been Serpent OS, which many people have been eagerly waiting for since the past few years. Luckily, for them, the wait is now almost over.
With this First Look, we will be taking a close look at a very early build of Serpent OS that's surprisingly quite usable.

The long-awaited Linux distro Serpent OS is finally here
Unlike most current Linux distributions, Serpent OS does not use existing distributions like Ubuntu or Debian. Ikey Doherty and his team have been writing Serpent OS from scratch for the past four years. This fact allows Serpent OS to boast features not found on other Linux distros. The team hopes that thanks to this, the user will benefit from a more efficient system that can leverage cutting-edge tools to increase productivity, lower development time, and create a system that isn’t “broken” by updates.
The Serpent OS pre-alpha ships with GNOME 45.3, which is not the latest environment, but this may change in the final release. The minimal desktop includes a pre-installed app selection following suit. Notable apps include Mozilla Firefox and Zed code editor, the latter only recently available to users of Mac OS. Much like Serpent OS, Zed editor provides a clean and fast user experience while leveraging the performance enhancements of the Rust programming language.

Serpent OS Prealpha0 Released
Well, it didn't take us that long, really ... Our technical preview, prealpha0, is now available for testing!
Head to our download page to grab serpent-os-prealpha-0.iso now!
This is a super rough version of Serpent OS that is capable of being installed on baremetal hardware and VMs that support UEFI and OpenGL acceleration. It is however not recommended for use daily due to the early nature and a bunch of packages being wildly out of date. It features a minimal GNOME desktop with the Firefox web browser and a terminal.
