ODROID-Go Ultra portable gaming console and devkit coming soon with Amlogic S922X SoC (UPDATEx2)
The Korean company’s adventure with portable gaming consoles started with the ESP32-based ODROID-Go to celebrate its 10th birthday in 2018. At the time it looked like a side project, but the console was popular enough that they released their first Linux handheld game console with the ODROID-Go Advance (OGA) in 2019, and then the ODROID-Go Super (OGS) in 2020 with a larger 5-inch display, and both equipped with a Rockchip RK3326 quad-core Cortex-A35 processor. The new ODROID-Go Ultra is based on the same design as the OGS model, but with a serious jump in performance, and the ability to support more demanding emulators.

A few developers will get their hands on samples next week, and mass production is scheduled to start later on with sales and shipping expected to start in October 2022 with the ODRODI-Go Ultra going for $111.

Hardkernel has been making single-board computers for more than a decade and starting in 2018 company began repurposing some of its hardware to make hacker-friendly game consoles sold under the ODROID-Go brand.
The latest model is the same size and shape as the ODROID-Go Super, which was introduced in 2020. But the new model has a faster CPU, improved graphics performance, and twice as much RAM (the memory is also speedier now).
The ODROID-Go Super also had just enough built-in storage for a bootloader, which meant that the operating system had to be installed on a microSD card. The new Ultra model has 16GB of eMMC flash storage for the operating system, which means it boots more quickly and offers better stability.
Amlogic’s S922X processor has been a popular option for Android-powered media streaming devices in recent years, but it’s less commonly found in mobile devices. But Hardkernel seems pretty confident in the new processor and other upgrades. The company says the new ODROID-Go Super performs more than twice as fast as the previous-gen model… although it’s a bit less energy efficient. Despite having a larger battery, the new handheld should only get an estimated 6 hours of continuous game play time, compared with 10 hours for the ODROID-GO Super.

Hardkernel has revealed the ODROID-Go Ultra, another gaming handheld in the ODROID-Go series. To recap, the company released the ODROID-Go Super for US$89.95 in January 2021, which featured the Rockchip RK3326 SoC and a 5-inch display running at 854 x 480 pixels. Seemingly, the ODROID-Go Ultra utilises the same display as the ODROID-Go Super, but with a more potent chipset powering it.
Specifically, the ODROID-Go Ultra has the 5-inch LCD display from the ODROID-Go Super, but with the Amlogic S922X, a chipset on which Hardkernel bases the ODROID-N2 Plus. For reference, the Amlogic S922X has four ARM Cortex-A73 CPU cores running at 2.2 GHz, another two Cortex-A53 CPU cores clock at 2.0 GHz and a Mali-G52 MP4 GPU that peaks at 846 MHz. Additionally, the ODROID-Go Ultra comes with 16 GB of eMMC flash storage, expandable via a microSD card slot (UHS-1), and 2 GB of LPDDR4 RAM running at 1,608 MHz.
