The Omen (2006)
Submitted by srlinuxx on Monday 12th of June 2006 11:54:30 AM Filed under
The new remake of The Omen that hit theaters last weekend was a great disappointment. It lacked the suspense and biting "horror" found in the original.

Will the spam never stop?

When you hear about spam in the news, they're always talking about email spam... but of late, the spammers are taking a different tack, and it seems that they're not giving up without a fight.
Slashdot's new look?

Hey, slashdot is looking a bit better these days. How long has this new look been going on? Shows how often I actually go there.
more site stuff

Well, just a short sweet post. That other server was finally brought back online at 8:pm my time after being down since 3:ish am. That's almost 17 hours. They did not answer my email this time, but the first time it happened, they answered my email within 90 minutes and had the site back up shortly after that.
I took the opportunity to test upgrading drupal to 4.7 then 4.7.1 and it was much easier than the upgrade from 4.5.8 to 4.6.6 (now 4.6.7). So you know what that means! Yep, I'm gonna be bring tuxmachines down sometime in the near future, probably tonight whiles traffic is low, and do the upgrade. It really didn't take long to get the basic functionality back, so we won't be down long.
Guess We'll Go For It?

Well, despite my hesitation, it looks like moving to a new host from my home based server might be a good idea. I received less than a 100 votes, but most said it was somewhat to quite a bit faster with a few stating about the same. No one reports slower response time.

If you've noticed the lack of reviews and slower than usual performance of tuxmachines, there is a good reason. I'm working on an off-site hosting vps in hopes of moving tuxmachines to a faster server and/or larger pipe.

Ever have one of those days when you can't stand end users? I know I have.
There are several expectations end users have for people creating software, or even Linux distros. They want it to work on their hardware, they want it to be stable, and they want it right now. But, at the same time, new releases shouldn't come too often, or it messes up the feng shui of their systems.

Drupal Upgrade
Submitted by srlinuxx on Tuesday 9th of May 2006 07:35:05 PM Filed under
Well, we have the site updated to 4.6.6. It was rough, but we are just about there. I was planning to upgrade to 4.7.x as soon as the modules and bug fixes caught up a little better, but as rough as upgrading Drupal is, it might be a bit longer.
First Time For Everything

Just thought I'd throw this out there. I registered to reply to a comment, and since I've got my own blog...
Anyway, you can check here for my adventures in Slax Linux, as well as whatever else I pick up along the way. I've got great plans for some of the old computers I have lying around, and I'll update as I learn things. I've got things to say, but I don't have so much time to say them... Oh well, that's life when you're in spinlock.
Site Maintenance and Downtime
Submitted by srlinuxx on Saturday 6th of May 2006 08:27:03 PM Filed under
The site was down in the early part of this morning due to maintenance/system software upgrades. It will go down again tonight at approximately the same time and for about the same length of time as I attempt to upgrade the cms.

The OpenSuSE Roadmap for their 10.1 release schedule has been updated: It now appears that a RC3 might be in the works and possibly released on Apr 28.

Installing Xgl on Suse 10.1 RC2 couldn't be simpler. It does require video acceleration; typically, that means using an nVidia or ATI graphics card with the manufacturer's proprietary drivers installed (see the Xgl page on the Suse wiki for more information).
YaST (Yet another SUSE 10.1 RC2 Trial), Part 1

Even though I swore I'd keep Fedora Core around for a while, it only took 3 months before I replaced it with Suse (again). It's all Xgl's fault. The Kororaa Live CD is very cool. Since Xgl was created by a Novell engineer, and there are Xgl binaries for Suse, and since Suse is coming out with a new version, and (fintally!) since Xgl hasn't made it into Debian Sid yet, it made sense to install Suse to use as an Xgl testbed.

Red Hat Hires a Blind Software Engineer to Improve Accessibility on Linux Desktop
Accessibility on a Linux desktop is not one of the strongest points to highlight. However, GNOME, one of the best desktop environments, has managed to do better comparatively (I think).
In a blog post by Christian Fredrik Schaller (Director for Desktop/Graphics, Red Hat), he mentions that they are making serious efforts to improve accessibility.
Starting with Red Hat hiring Lukas Tyrychtr, who is a blind software engineer to lead the effort in improving Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and Fedora Workstation in terms of accessibility.
