Low-end machine, lightweight applications and some other stuff
Submitted by toshiba on Sunday 14th of January 2007 09:31:15 AMI had an old Toshiba PII 266 Mhz (I think), 4 GB HD, 32 Mb RAM preinstalled with windows 95 lying around, and I thought it with be fun to mess around with it a bit. Given the low specs of my toshiba box, I figured I needed to use either a distro with a text based installer or a distro with a very lightweight window manager, such as fluxbox.

Conflicted over openSUSE
Submitted by srlinuxx on Monday 8th of January 2007 08:59:35 PM Filed under
I've found myself conflicted over Novell's recent pact with the devil as much as or perhaps moreso than many others have said. openSUSE has sorta been my pet project to follow since they announced they were opening up SuSE to the community. But now that they've taken this controversial step and are even including M$ code, what are open source supporters to do?
Ubuntu: Needs more QA

I have been using Ubuntu extensively since 5.10. There are a lot of things I like about it, however here I will spend a few words about one thing that can definitively be improved: Quality Assurance.

Submitted by eco2geek on Thursday 21st of December 2006 07:51:38 AM Filed under
In part 1, openSUSE got installed and configured on a Compaq Presario V2000 with an ATI Radeon Xpress 200M PCIE graphics chipset and a 32-bit CPU. Now it's time to go for the bling.
Installing openSUSE 10.2 on a Compaq laptop (Part 1)
Submitted by eco2geek on Wednesday 20th of December 2006 02:48:57 AM Filed under
My favorite distro faces an uncertain future, so I decided to install openSUSE 10.2 over it on my Compac Presario V2000. Also because... OK, I'll come clean: the real reason was for the eye candy. I wanted Beryl, with the cube, the wobbly windows, the "magic lantern" window minimizing effects, rain, snow -- you know, Eye Candy.

Red Hat Hires a Blind Software Engineer to Improve Accessibility on Linux Desktop
Accessibility on a Linux desktop is not one of the strongest points to highlight. However, GNOME, one of the best desktop environments, has managed to do better comparatively (I think).
In a blog post by Christian Fredrik Schaller (Director for Desktop/Graphics, Red Hat), he mentions that they are making serious efforts to improve accessibility.
Starting with Red Hat hiring Lukas Tyrychtr, who is a blind software engineer to lead the effort in improving Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and Fedora Workstation in terms of accessibility.
