Run iexplore.exe under wine

Linux

I hate having to use Microsoft Tools. At work, however, we have a web page that we have to update each week--and, it only works with Internet Explorer.

Since I'm now running my work workstation full-time under Linux instead of Windows XP, I've need to get MS iexplore.exe running under wine. It was simple--here's how I did it.

HD-DVD and Blu-Ray war...Why is it going nowhere?

Is there a conspiracy as to why this format war is going nowhere? Or a real insidious plan?

How to get SLAB working with SMART

Howtos

If i had to name one thing that i sincerely hate about openSUSE, it'd have to be YaST's package manager with its zypper backend, so, as you may have guessed from the title, i use Smart instead, and i don't think i'm the only one here.

Motherboard Fails

Hardware is getting reasonably reliable if you are careful to buy components of decent quality. Recently, a bargain motherboard/CPU purchase at Fry's Electronics came back to bite me in the fanny.

I guess there is some honesty in Nigeria after all...

It took about a week, but the government of Nigeria stepped in: "We are sticking with that platform," said the official.

Web survey numbers...How do they calculate them?

Who should we trust? Are the numbers, right?

Microsoft and "Interoperability"...LOL! That's a good one!

Don't you get the feeling that Microsoft isn't all that serious about interoperability to begin with, and everything they do has a catch behind it all?

Why is the choice of distribution so important and contentious?

A quick question to help shed some light on this topic. You needn't bother reading my blabble, just the usual rantings but I would like to see some views on why this whole area generates so much emotion when basically every distribution is a Yum or Apt away from being exactly the same as the next.

Why I hate Ubuntu (even though it's awesome)

When you put up a detour in Debian, put up a signpost.

My distro is redder than yours, so ner!

What is needed here is a celebrity distro match, battle to the death. And in the blue corner, weighing in at 70lbs, wearing knobbly knees and a tank top, master of the inane, lord or pointlessness, it's Faaaaaaaanboy! And in the orangy corner, weighing in at 71.123984775lbs, taking into account a floating point error, compiled 1 second faster, the spark of the unholy distro...'buntu basher masher.

Don't complain. Do something useful instead.

Life throws us curve balls, but how we react or respond to a given situation is what really matters.

From a PCLinuxOS user: Kubuntu Gutsy doesn't totally reek.

I'm a confirmed PCLinuxOS and KDE user. But, I've given a brief trial on my test box of Kubuntu Gutsy-X86_64. Aside from the whole sudo vs su issue (I hate sudo), Kubuntu Gutsy doesn't totally reek. Actually it's usable. Either I have changed as a Linux user, or Kubuntu has gotten better.

Why you need the command line. How many reasons can I come up with before breakfast?

What is a Hacao Classmate PC?

"An Intel powered classmate PC is a small, mobile learning assistant and educational solution that Intel specially developed for students in emerging markets. It's a rugged learning device designed to provide affordable, collaborative learning environments.

A classmate PC has been designed as a "tool to think and learn with" with the aim of transforming education. Toward this goal, Intel has devised a platform that meets the needs and goals of different players, namely, students, teachers, parents, school staff, and policymakers, while addressing the pedagogical, technological, social, and physical requirements of school environments

  • How To Install MongoDB on AlmaLinux 9 - idroot

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install MongoDB on AlmaLinux 9. For those of you who didn’t know, MongoDB is a high-performance, highly scalable document-oriented NoSQL database. Unlike in SQL databases where data is stored in rows and columns inside tables, in MongoDB, data is structured in JSON-like format inside records which are referred to as documents. The open-source attribute of MongoDB as a database software makes it an ideal candidate for almost any database-related project. This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of the MongoDB NoSQL database on AlmaLinux 9. You can follow the same instructions for CentOS and Rocky Linux.

  • Self-host a Ghost Blog With Traefik

Ghost is a very popular open-source content management system. Started as an alternative to WordPress and it went on to become an alternative to Substack by focusing on membership and newsletter. The creators of Ghost offer managed Pro hosting but it may not fit everyone's budget. Alternatively, you can self-host it on your own cloud servers. On Linux handbook, we already have a guide on deploying Ghost with Docker in a reverse proxy setup. Instead of Ngnix reverse proxy, you can also use another software called Traefik with Docker. It is a popular open-source cloud-native application proxy, API Gateway, Edge-router, and more. I use Traefik to secure my websites using an SSL certificate obtained from Let's Encrypt. Once deployed, Traefik can automatically manage your certificates and their renewals. In this tutorial, I'll share the necessary steps for deploying a Ghost blog with Docker and Traefik.

Red Hat Hires a Blind Software Engineer to Improve Accessibility on Linux Desktop

Accessibility on a Linux desktop is not one of the strongest points to highlight. However, GNOME, one of the best desktop environments, has managed to do better comparatively (I think). In a blog post by Christian Fredrik Schaller (Director for Desktop/Graphics, Red Hat), he mentions that they are making serious efforts to improve accessibility. Starting with Red Hat hiring Lukas Tyrychtr, who is a blind software engineer to lead the effort in improving Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and Fedora Workstation in terms of accessibility. Read more
