Jim Grey ☛ I can count pageviews, but I can't count readers
That doesn’t mean pageviews tell me nothing. They tell me when something I wrote gets discovered. They tell me when Hacker News sends a crowd my way, or when Google decides an old camera review is useful to somebody. If I monetized this site, pageviews would matter in a very direct way. Every pageview would generate ad impressions, which would generate income. I tried that many years ago, didn’t like how it affected your experience with the site, found it to be a giant pain in my ass, and got rid of it.

[Old] Jon ☛ Decision to Self-Host
I checked how much I'm actually spending on services that I could self host. My Netflix clone where I stream media from Backblaze B2 is getting to about US$20 a month. I have a VPS costing US$10 per month. I have US$5.00 a month in hosted Route 53 zones. These are all things I can easily host myself. I wouldn't want to host my primary DNS zone from home. A $3.50 VPS from Vultr should be more than sufficient. So I can reduce a $35 per month bill to $3.50 by rearranging my hardware and buying some extra bits. A 4TB HDD costs about AU$120 (US$82) not that I would use a single disk which highlights how much I'm overpaying for storage. Most of the bells and whistles that come with B2 are wasted on me.
These realisations and what followed have been keeping me very busy over the past few months.

Hackaday ☛ FCC ISM Rules May Shatter Lora Mesh Communities
Or at least, that’s how it used to be. With the recent revelation that their default radio configurations have potentially been in violation of the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) regulations governing amateur usage of the 900 MHz industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band, the users and developers of both Meshtastic and MeshCore have been sent scrambling. Getting in compliance isn’t necessarily a technical challenge. In fact, Meshtastic has already introduced changes aimed to address the issue and anyone running the latest alpha release can be sure that their initial radio configuration will meet FCC standards.
