Fedora Linux Asahi Remix 45 brings Apple Silicon M3 support to Linux
Last week, we reported that the Asahi Linux project had added support for the Apple M3 series. Now, Fedora 45 beta has just been released, including Fedora Linux Asahi Remix 45 beta. We can now confirm that this version brings the upstream support for the Apple M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max Macs for the first time. Unfortunately, 3D GPU acceleration will take a bit more time but will be delivered in a Mesa update in the future.
The final release of Fedora Linux Asahi Remix 45 is slated for one month from now and will occur at the same time as the main Fedora Linux 45 launch. The beta features all Fedora 45 changes. It adds hardware-accelerated H.264 and VP9 decoding for all Apple Silicon chips, and brings AV1 decoding exclusively to M3 systems.
Bringing Linux to Apple’s chips requires reverse-engineering of proprietary hardware on the part of the Asahi Linux project. Apple doesn’t help the project at all with documentation, explaining why some things, like the 3D GPU drivers, will only arrive later in a Mesa update.

Fedora 45 beta drags the Linux console into the 21st century
Fedora Linux 45 beta has arrived with Linux kernel 7.2, a release-candidate build of GNOME 51, and extensive changes beneath the desktop.
The biggest surprise is that Linux's legacy in-kernel console – the text-mode interface normally hidden beneath the GUI – has been replaced with a software-controlled alternative.
The replacement is kmscon, a userspace terminal emulator that has been in development for more than a decade. Its Freedesktop project page explains that it uses the kernel's Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) and Kernel Mode Setting (KMS) facilities to configure the display, while offering better internationalization support. Kmscon was announced way back in 2012, but after a few years' work, developer David Herrmann moved on to other things. Fortunately, another developer, Peifeng Yu – nicknamed Aetf – maintained a fork for a decade until the original team resumed work last year.

It’s Time to Test Fedora 45 Beta
If you're a fan of Fedora (and who isn't?), then you'll be happy to know that the beta release is now available for testing.
This new release includes a Gnome desktop with version 51; on the KDE Plasma side of things, you get version 6.7. As far as the kernel is concerned, we're talking version 7.2 and all the associated goodness.
Outside of the fancy new desktop releases, one of the more important items in the release is the switch from in-kernel fbcon console to kmscon, which is a userspace console and terminal emulator that replaces the traditional in-kernel Virtual Terminal (VT) and agetty login prompt. The new kmscon uses Kernel Mode Setting/Direct Rendering Manager (KMS/DRM) to handle graphics output instead of relying on the kernel's more basic text/framebuffer console. This change will vastly improve font and Unicode handling to deliver more modern rendering for Linux.
