The European Commission’s proposed EU KIDS Act addresses a growing concern shared by parents, educators, policymakers, and young people: some online services are designed to encourage excessive use, exploit users’ attention, or expose minors to harmful interactions. Protecting children online is an important and legitimate policy objective.

Almost a Decade of Tux Machines in Internet Relay Chat (IRC)

posted by Roy Schestowitz on Sep 13, 2026,
updated Sep 13, 2026

Almost a decade ago we joined IRC. Tux Machines had not been on IRC networks until then and it uses the same network as Techrights. The Tux Machines channel has dozens of people on it.

IRC in general is far from dead. With about 300k online, IRC is not dead and it's now in its 39^th year as a protocol. It's older than the Web.

Recently linux.org created its own IRC network [1, ]. As of yesterday, the linux.org IRC network fell from 13 people online to just 9. Not quite picking up momentum... but not entirely perishing either. █
