Audacity 4.0 Open-Source Audio Editor Officially Released, Here’s What’s New
Highlights of Audacity 4 include a new project manager that prompts you to select your project from the local file system or cloud, create a new one, or copy audio clips across projects, as well as support for Nyquist and VST3 plugins across Linux, macOS, and Windows, and LV2 on Linux, and Audio Units on macOS.
Audacity 4 also brings new functions, including but not limited to labeling tracks by marking sections and dropping chapter points, a redesigned envelope tool for reshaping gain envelopes across audio clips, and spectral editing by selecting frequency regions in the spectrogram and applying effects where you need them.

Audacity 4.0 released with a modern interface and clip editing
The Qt port of Audacity is more than a superficial – some would say much-needed – facelift, as the toolkit switch brings native HDPI scaling, light and dark mode support and is able to follow system accent colours in its UI. A new app logo compliment the refresh.
Customising Audacity’s interface is now possible. Toolbars and panels can be moved, popped-out or closed. Users can create UI layouts to suit their needs and save them as Workspaces to switch back to, alongside the built-in Modern, Classic and Music layouts.
Audacity 4.0 switches to a .aup4 project format that stores preview thumbnails and new clip and appearance data. It converts Audacity 3.x .aup3 and older .aup files to the new format – a one way process as converted projects can’t be saved to older formats.

Audacity 4.0 released
Version 4.0 of the Audacity audio editor has been released. Notable changes in this release include a rewritten interface using Qt, ability to save user-interface layouts as "Workspaces", improvements in working with audio clips, and a new .aup4 project format.
The release is not fully feature-compatible with the Audacity 3.x series; see the compatibility notes for a list of missing features.

Audacity released the new 4.0.0 version a few days ago! Here’s the new PPA contains the native .deb for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. The new 4.0.0 version of this audio editor and recording application is a new major release that ported its UI from wxWidgets to Qt6 with native high-DPI rendering support.
