Quoting: Desktop Linux is boring now, but that’s exactly what it needs to succeed —
After literally decades, I'm frankly sick of reading (and writing!) about the "year of the Linux desktop" where the world's most popular server and embedded OS finally makes a dent in the desktop OS market.
It didn't happen, because Linux was not ready for it to happen. If you wanted to feel edgy and cool (or you were a software developer), then there was a reason to have Linux as your daily driver. In my case, it was mainly because I could not afford a bunch of Windows licenses, and my college netbook could literally only run Linux, since it had too little RAM for Windows.
For everyone else, Linux must have come across as beta software. The kernel may have been maturing quickly, but from a usability perspective, it always felt like the bare minimum cover for the scaffolding underneath.
