Ubuntu inherited much of its foundation from an older project, while Fedora, CentOS Stream, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux occupy different points along another long-running branch. SUSE took a more circuitous route, absorbing ideas and technology from several early distributions before growing into an ecosystem with its own identity.
These connections are not always straightforward forks or direct lines of descent.
