HowTo Geek ☛ Locked out of Linux? Here are 2 safe ways to reset your password (no reinstall)
You don't need to reinstall your whole operating system just because you forgot your Linux login. It's actually pretty easy to reset your Linux password. All you need to know is the username (which is usually visible on the login screen). I'll show you two ways you can reset the password.
This is the easiest way to reset the password. All you need to do is temporarily edit the GRUB config and then boot into the Linux shell with that temporary config. Let me demonstrate.
Start by rebooting the machine and entering into the GRUB menu. A lot of distributions boot into the GRUB menu by default before jumping into the login screen. If yours doesn't, you can press the Esc key during the boot process to enter the GRUB menu.
