Fedora-Based Ultramarine 43 Is Now Available with Pinebook Pro Support
Highlights of Ultramarine 43 include a new theme called Orchis for the Xfce edition, the latest KDE Plasma 6.5 and GNOME 49 desktop environments for the KDE Plasma and GNOME editions, Pinebook Pro support, updated Raspberry Pi 4 images, and support for the CachyOS kernel as a tweak in umcli.
This release also brings back the option to use RPMs instead of Flatpaks, and it’s the first Ultramarine release to provide a public preview for Readymade, which is recommended for full disk installs only, as an alternative to the Anaconda installer. Readymade is a simple frontend for systemd-repart.

Ultramarine Linux 43 Picks Plasma as Its New Recommended Edition
Only a month after the previous 42 release, Ultramarine Linux 43 is now out, powered by kernel 6.17 and based on Fedora 43. Developed by Fyra Labs, the distro bets on the Btrfs filesystem under the hood, and it is now beginning with the retirement of Ultramarine’s long-standing “Flagship” designation.
With that said, the Budgie edition, which previously held that role, is no longer the recommended default. The project notes that its original rationale for choosing Budgie was that Fedora did not offer it at the time.
But now Ultramarine is formally recommending the Plasma Edition going forward. According to devs, this change doesn’t remove Budgie from the lineup; it simply becomes “Budgie Edition,” still fully supported and updated with the latest fixes as the desktop approaches its 10.10 release.

Ultramarine 43 is Cooking with Gas
Budgie has been our (rather acclaimed) Flagship for a couple years, but over the last year we've noticed ourselves recommending other editions, this is (obviously) not a great endorsement for Budgie.
Budgie was chosen as Ultramarine's Flagship for a pretty silly reason, simply because Fedora didn't have it yet. This has changed, and better options have emerged.
KDE Plasma's 6.0 release made Plasma into a highly polished, modern experience, and it's only gotten better since. KDE and the Fedora KDE SIG put an insane amount of effort into Plasma, from its 5-Minute-Bugs initiative to dropping X11 support before GNOME.
In Ultramarine 43 we are retiring the Flagship brand and recommending Plasma Edition. It's not called Flagship, but it is our recommended edition for newcomers and indecisive people. Budgie isn't going anywhere, and you can still download and use it as Budgie Edition!
