I have tried almost every mainstream distro, along with plenty of odd ones that I wouldn't recommend anyone to install on their main PC. Some of them were great, some were forgettable, and a few were absolute headaches. But over time, I found a handful that were genuinely reliable and easy to recommend without any hesitation. There are a few that genuinely stand out and are the ones I think everyone should try at least once. Here’s our verdict captured in a legendary LinuxLinks-style ratings chart. Only free and open source software is eligible for inclusion here. We only include terminal-based tools in this roundup. We’ve already published a separate roundup for graphical volume mixers. * ⚓ MemProcFS_-_view_physical_memory_as_files_in_a_virtual_file_system_- LinuxLinks⠀⇛ Easy trivial point and click memory analysis without the need for complicated commandline arguments! Access memory content and artifacts via files in a mounted virtual file system or via a feature rich application library to include in your own projects! Analyze memory dump files, live memory via DumpIt or WinPMEM, live memory in read-write mode from virtual machines or from PCILeech FPGA hardware devices! This is cross-platform software running under Linux, macOS, and Windows. It’s free and open source. * ⚓ cljfmt_-_detect_and_fix_formatting_errors_in_Clojure_code_- LinuxLinks⠀⇛ It is not the goal of the project to provide a one-to-one mapping between a Clojure syntax tree and formatted text; rather the intent is to correct formatting errors with minimal changes to the existing structure of the text. cljfmt integrates with many existing build tools, or can be used as a library. If you want format completely unstructured Clojure code, the zprint project may be more suitable. This is free and open source software. * ⚓ Tinte_-_wallpaper_utility_and_theme_generator_-_LinuxLinks⠀⇛ Tinte is a wallpaper utility and theme generator for Wayland. It’s a ork of aether that is not limited to Omarchy. This is free and open source software. * ⚓ Groonga_-_fulltext_search_engine_and_column_store_-_LinuxLinks⠀⇛ Groonga is also a column-oriented database management system (DBMS). Compared with well-known row-oriented systems, such as MySQL and PostgreSQL, column-oriented systems are more suited for aggregate queries. Due to this advantage, Groonga can cover weakness of row-oriented systems. This is cross-platform software running under Linux, macOS, and Windows. This is free and open source software. * ⚓ oeis-tui_-_TUI_and_CLI_for_browsing_the_On-Line_Encyclopedia_of_Integer Sequences_-_LinuxLinks⠀⇛ oeis-tui is a TUI and CLI for browsing the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS) in the terminal. I call it ExTiX 25.12 LXQt Live System. (The previous LXQt version was 24.12 from 241223). ExTiX 25.12 is a very premature remix of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (Resolute Raccoon). Ubuntu 26.04 LTS will be supported until July 2031. FEATURES The best thing with ExTiX 25.12 is that while running the system live (from DVD/USB) or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu system. So easy that a ten year child can do it! One other very good thing with this version of ExTiX is that it is quite light. The ISO file is of only 2440 MB, which means that you can run the system super fast from RAM. When the boot process is ready you can eject the DVD or USB stick. Use Boot alternative 2 or Advanced options… >> load to RAM. * ⚓ ExTiX_25.12-2_Mini_–_a_live_remix_of_upcoming_Ubuntu_26.04_LTS_–_with LXDE,_Refracta_Snapshot_and_kernel_6.17.8-amd64-exton_:::_Build_251205⠀⇛ NEWS 251205 ABOUT ExTiX 25.12-2 Mini with LXDE and Refracta Snapshot ::: Build 251205 I have made a new version of ExTiX (The Ultimate Linux System). I call it ExTiX 25.12-2 LXDE Mini Live System. (The previous ExTiX Mini version was 23.5 from 230510). ExTiX 25.12-2 is a VERY PREMATURE remix of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (Resolute Raccoon). Ubuntu 26.04 LTS will be supported until July 2031. ABOUT Build 25.12-2 I was aiming to build a really light version of ExTiX (as a remix of upcoming Ubuntu 26.04). I therefore started “from scratch” using the Debootstrap method. Debootstrap is a low- level tool that installs a basic Ubuntu system into a directory, giving you complete control over every package from the ground up. This method is often used to create a custom installation in a virtual machine (using QEMU, VirtualBox, etc.) or onto a specific disk partition. No matter how hard I tried I could not make a smaller ISO than the current one of 1870 MB. Many big packages are necessary to make the system usable. As an example I can mention the linux-firmware package. It is of 650 MB. Without it the System is useless. A small ISO is of importance if you want to run the system from RAM on older computers with low RAM. To run from RAM is the best way to run any Linux system. Super fast! I decided to use LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) as DE instead of LXQt in the hope that it would hold down the size of the System. It did not help much though. ⣿⣿⠛⢻⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⢿⠿⠿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⣿⣿⣿⣭⡉⠻⣿⡿⠿⠛⣉⡭⠝⢛⣉⣭⣿⣿⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣷⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣟⣛⢂⠐⠒⠒⡛⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⢿⡽⣿⣽⣿⣿⣭⣙⡶⠟⣋⡡⠴⣒⣩⣵⣶⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠤⡤⣤⣤⠀⢴⣿⣿⣿⣿⣷⣤⣶⣶⣦⣤⣤⣾⣿⣶⣴⣤⣴⣤⣴⣤⣶⣴⣿⡟⢛⡡⢤⣒⣭⣵⣶⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⠿⠛⠛⠉ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣦⣤⣿⣿⡇⢐⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⣿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⢿⣯⣷⣾⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⠿⠟⠛⠉⠉⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⣿⣿⠿⠟⠛⠋⠉⠀⠀⠀⠀⠂⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⣿⣿⣟⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣟⣿⣿⣿⣿⣇⣀⣀⣀⣀⣀⣀⣀⣀⣀⡀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠸⠏⠁⠀⠀⠀⢀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⠄⠅⠀⠚⠛⠛⠛⠛⠃⠀⠀⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⡀⠀⠀⠀ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣻⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⠿⠿⢿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣯⣽⣉⣭⣩⣍⣉⣉⣈⣉⣉⣽⣿⣿⠿⠛⠻⠿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣶⣦⣤⣄⣀⣀⠀⣿⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⠀⢀⣗⠀⠈⠀ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣷⡄⠀⠀⠀⠈⠙⠿⢿⣿⣷⢺⣿⣿⣿⣿⣽⣿⣿⣏⢉⡽⠀⠀⢠⡄⠀⠘⠻⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠿⢛⢛⠉⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣶⡟⠇⠀⢸⡇⣿⡿⠀⠀⠿⠇⠰⠀ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠋⠙⠟⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⣀⣁⣙⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡃⢀⡀⠀⠀⠀⢀⣤⣴⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠿⣛⣛⣛⠒⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠈⠁⠀⠀⠘⠀⠀⠀⠀⠠⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⡛⡿⣿⣿⣿⣿⢻⣿⣟⣿⣿⣿⡏⠀⠀⠢⣄⠀⠀⠀⣠⣴⣿⡿⠿⢻⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⢿⣵⣿⣿⣦⣀⣄⣁⠉⠉⠋⢁⡀⠉⠛⢉⠁⢈⣏⠛⠛⡿⠕⣦⡀⠀⠀⣠⡂⠀⠀⠀⠀⠰⠀⣠⡄⢰⣧⡄⠀⠀ ⠛⣯⣹⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⠉⣿⣿⡿⠃⠀⠀⠀⠈⠳⠄⢰⣏⢹⣿⣧⡄⣊⣻⣷⣿⣟⢿⣿⣿⡿⠟⠉⠈⢿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠛⣩⣦⣼⣅⢀⡾⣅⠀⢸⡁⢀⣴⡄⠀⢻⣿⡆⠎⠁⠀⣀⣄⠀⠀⠀⠀⢻⡀⠈⠛⠃⠀⡀ ⠀⠘⠛⠛⢳⢄⣟⣿⣿⣿⠋⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠰⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣷⣾⣿⣿⠀⠀⠀⠀⠈⢿⣿⣿⣿⣯⠈⠀⠈⢉⣁⣶⡿⣿⡦⠄⠀⠀⢸⡇⠀⠀⠘⠟⠁⠀⣤⣾⣿⣿⣆⠀⠀⠀⠀⢱⣦⠄⢰⡏⠀ ⠒⠶⢶⣶⣾⣼⣿⣿⠏⠁⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢻⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⢻⣿⣿⣿⣦⣤⡿⠉⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⣻⣿⣿⣿⠀⠀⠀⠼⠛⠿⢻⣯⠀⠘⣷⣚⣟⣀⣐⣷⡎⣠⠀⠀⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠀⠀⠀⠀⠈⣿⣶⣤⣄⣤ ⢻⣶⣤⡈⠛⢿⣿⣏⡀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠛⠋⠉⠉⠁⠸⣿⠉⠉⠉⠙⠛⠀⠀⣀⣀⣀⣀⣯⣿⣿⣿⣏⣀⣀⣰⣦⣀⣴⠈⣿⠀⢀⣴⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⠅⢫⠀⠀⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⡶⣫⣿⣿ ⣿⣧⣳⢧⣄⠀⠟⠉⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣿⣤⣤⣤⣀⣸⣿⠉⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣀⣿⡆⢀⠈⡋⠉⠛⢿⡇⠀⣽⠀⠀⣿⣿⣿⠿⠟⠂⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣹⣿⣿ ⣿⣾⣿⢾⣿⡆⠗⠂⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣀⣀⣀⣠⣤⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣙⠏⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣿⣿⣿⠿⠻⣿⣶⣶⣶⣦⣄⡀⠀⠀⡇⠀⠀⠟⠉⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣿⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣾⡏⢿⠃⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣾⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⠿⠿⣷⡄⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⡧⠠⣀⣻⣿⣿⣿⣿⣧⣇⠂⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⣄⠀⠀⠀⢹⣿⣿ ⣟⣿⣿⣟⡌⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⣿⡛⠛⢛⣻⣿⡭⣭⣉⡲⢶⣆⣀⠀⠒⠒⠀⠀⠀⠀⠒⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣽⣥⣬⣿⣿⣿⢫⠽⠛⢛⣻⣿⢦⠃⠀⠀⣠⣤⣤⣶⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⠀⠀⠘⣿⣿ ⠿⣝⣿⢫⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣀⣤⣤⣄⣸⣿⣧⣄⡘⠻⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠓⠚⠛⠛⠁⠉⠙⠿⣶⣶⣶⣶⣦⣤⣤⣤⣤⣿⣿⣿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠦⠦⠘⠛⠛⠃⠀⠰⣳⣿⣛⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣇⠀⠀⠀⣿⣿ ⠢⡍⠉⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⣴⣾⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣷⣶⣶⣶⣶⣤⣤⣶⣶⣶⣤⣬⣭⣽⣿⣿⣤⣀⣬⣬⣭⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣶⡶⠶⠶⠶⠶⠶⢶⣶⡶⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⢿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠀⠀⠀⣿⣿ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⡀⠀⣀⢀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠁⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠛⠛⠛⠛⣟⠀⠀⠀⠛⠃ ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 582 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2025/12/07/Fedora_vs_Arch_Linux_How_to_choose_your_next_Linux_distro_and_w.shtml Gemini version at gemini://gemini.tuxmachines.org/n/2025/12/07/Fedora_vs_Arch_Linux_How_to_choose_your_next_Linux_distro_and_w.gmi ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ Fedora vs. Arch Linux: How to choose your next Linux distro (and which one I use)⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ posted by Rianne Schestowitz on Dec 07, 2025 Quoting: Fedora vs. Arch Linux: How to choose your next Linux distro (and which one I use) | ZDNET — The first Linux distribution I ever seriously used was Red Hat 5.2 (prior to the creation of Fedora). Back then, it was the best option for just about everyone. It was also hard to learn. Fortunately, the Linux landscape is much different now, and there are distributions that are so easy, they make Windows look like it was created for Albert Einstein-level brains. That doesn't mean every distribution is created equal. Even though there are versions of Linux that are easy enough that your grandma could use them, there are also distributions that are more challenging, as well as those that would challenge system admins and developers. Today, I want to talk about two distributions that exist somewhere in the lower-middle of the Linux difficulty ladder (which ranges from Linux Mint all the way to Gentoo): Fedora and Arch Linux.
