users of the BCacheFS filesystem, as amidst the occasional terse arguments and flowery self-praise on the Linux Kernel mailing list the future of this filesystem within the Linux kernel hung very much in the balance. After some initial confusion about what ‘externally maintained’ means in Linux parlance, it’s now clear that this means that BCacheFS has effectively been kicked out of the kernel as [Linus] promised and will ship as a DKMS module instead. The gory details of this change are discussed in a recent video by [Brodie Robertson]. * ⚓ [Old] OReilly ☛ Appendix_A_-_The_Tanenbaum-Torvalds_Debate⠀⇛ What follows in this appendix are what are known in the community as the Tanenbaum/Linus "Linux is obsolete" debates. Andrew Tanenbaum is a well-respected researcher who has made a very good living thinking about operating systems and OS design. In early 1992, noticing the way that the Linux discussion had taken over the discussion in comp.os.minix, he decided it was time to comment on Linux. Although Andrew Tanenbaum has been derided for his heavy hand and misjudgements of the Linux kernel, such a reaction to Tanenbaum is unfair. When Linus himself heard that we were including this, he wanted to make sure that the world understood that he holds no animus towards Tanenbaum and in fact would not have sanctioned its inclusion if we had not been able to convince him that it would show the way the world was thinking about OS design at the time. ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 334 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2025/09/20/Canonical_Ubuntu_Leftovers.shtml Gemini version at gemini://gemini.tuxmachines.org/n/2025/09/20/Canonical_Ubuntu_Leftovers.gmi ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ Canonical/Ubuntu Leftovers⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ posted by Roy Schestowitz on Sep 20, 2025 * ⚓ Ubuntu ☛ How_to_build_an_awesome_cloud_gaming_platform_with_Anbox Cloud⠀⇛ This is no longer a futuristic idea, it’s here. These communities have the deep experience that allows them to guide the evolution of the Internet towards common goals. Policymakers have none of that technical expertise, but are the legitimate source of policy decisions in any functioning society. They don’t have the means to develop new technical proposals: while most countries have a national standard body, their products are a poor fit for a global Internet, and those bodies generally lack specific expertise. So, it might seem logical for policymakers to turn to Internet standards bodies to develop the technical solutions for their policy goals, trusting the open process and community involvement to produce a good solution. Unfortunately, doing so can create problems that will cause such efforts to fail. o ⚓ [Old] Nemanja Trifunovic ☛ Decoding_UTF-8._Part_I:_Manual Decoding⠀⇛ In this article, we’ll focus on converting sequences of UTF-8 encoded 8-bit wide octets (we will call them “bytes” from now on) to UTF-32 encoded Unicode code points. Strictly speaking, code points are at most 21- bits wide, but a 32-bit value is used to store a single code point; the highest 11 bits are always zero. In practice, decoding UTF-8 often means direct conversion from UTF-8 to UTF-16, or even just validating a UTF- 8 sequence. o ⚓ [Old] Nemanja Trifunovic ☛ Decoding_UTF-8._Part_II:_Determining Sequence_Length_-_a_Straightforward_Approach⠀⇛ Analysis of a simple algorithm to determine the length of a valid UTF-8 sequence. o ⚓ [Old] Nemanja Trifunovic ☛ Decoding_UTF-8._Part_III:_Determining Sequence_Length_-_A_Lookup_Table⠀⇛ The obvious way to avoid branching in the code is to use a lookup table. As we have only 256 possible values for the first byte of a UTF-8 sequence, we can hard-code a simple table that would map values of the lead byte to sequence lengths. And because the possible values of a byte are contiguous (0-255), we can implement the table as a simple array, where the index is the value of the lead byte, and array elements are lengths of the sequence. o ⚓ [Old] Nemanja Trifunovic ☛ Decoding_UTF-8._Part_IV:_Determining Sequence_Length_-_Counting_Leading_Bits⠀⇛ Now, we will see how we can use some help from the hardware to accomplish the same task: based on the lead byte, calculate the UTF-8 sequence length. Murena or /e/OS 3.1.1⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ posted by Roy Schestowitz on Sep 20, 2025 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇Murena⦈_ We’re excited to announce the arrival of /e/OS 3.1.1, now available for all supported devices, whether you’re using an Official or a Community build. This new release brings a refined experience with a series of updates and improvements designed to enhance usability and performance across the board. Users of the new Fairphone (Gen. 6) will especially benefit, with key features like Mobile Data and VoLTE now enabled by default. The /e/OS Camera has also been enhanced to support 50 MP photos, and installation of /e/OS is now fully supported via the /e/OS Installer. Live Caption becomes more user-friendly as caption text can now be repositioned for better readability and accessibility. For families using /e/OS, Parental Control includes a crucial update. A clear warning now reminds parents to save the security code they define, as there’s no way to recover it if forgotten. Third-party app compatibility has been improved on several devices, including the Fairphone 3, 4, 5 and the new Gen. 6. This ensures a smoother and more consistent app experience across these models. It is equipped with 2 MB of non- volatile memory and 512 KB of RAM, offering headroom for complex applications such as Matter-based smart home devices without requiring external memory. * ⚓ Jeff Geerling ☛ I_regret_building_this_$3000_Pi_AI_cluster⠀⇛ Bottom line: this cluster's not a powerhouse. And dollar for dollar, if you're spending over $3k on a compute cluster, it's not the best value. It is efficient, quiet, and compact. So if density is important, and if you need lots of small, physically separate nodes, this could actually make sense. Like the only real world use case besides learning is for CI jobs or high security edge deployments, where you're not allowed to run multiple things on one server. * ⚓ Arduino ☛ This_mint_tin_radio_is_a_fresh_take_on_emergency communication⠀⇛ This is a compact, portable FM radio small enough to fit in a Smint tin (Smint is like an Italian-Dutch Altoids alternative). It has an extendable antenna and a standard 3.5mm audio jack for connecting headphones. Power comes from a trio of LR42 coin cell batteries. The FM radio station is configured in firmware and it is important to choose a reliable frequency, such as for a local news channel. The single button controls powers to the entire device. * ⚓ Raspberry Pi ☛ KAMPi_digital_camera⠀⇛ KAMPi is a digital camera built using a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5, a Raspberry Pi High Quality Camera, and a Waveshare Nano A Base Board, which is connected directly via GPIO to a Pimoroni HyperPixel 4.0″ Hi-Res Display. The camera is triggered by an Adafruit KB2040 (named so as it features our RP2040 chip!), which is connected to the Waveshare Nano A. My favourite part is the illuminated push button on top of the trigger switch. * ⚓ [Old] Kasiin ☛ 2025-08-04-Flipper_Zero_Geiger_Counter_Module_—_kasiin⠀⇛ This app gives you a graph view with counts per second (instantaneous measure of the radioactivity) as CPS and per minute as CPM. * ⚓ Purism ☛ Freedom_by_Design:_Why_Purism_Rejects_Big_IT_Status_Quo⠀⇛ At Purism, we don’t bolt privacy on after the fact. Indeed, it is nothing more than a super-cheap ESP32-C3 breakout board with an OLED screen and some code. Worse, you can’t even tell the time on it without pointing your cell phone at the QR code it generates. Plot twist: you skip the QR code and check the time on your phone. * ⚓ HiR ☛ Raspberry_Pi_Home-Lab_IDS_with_Suricata_and_Wazuh⠀⇛ I recently set up Suricata IDS in my home lab again as part of a re-build.   You'll need a RaspberryPi 3, 4 or 5 and an inexpensive smart switch that can mirror traffic from your home lab environment. I opted for the TP-Link_TL-SG105e and TL-SG-108e switches for my home lab, with 5 and 8 1GBPS ports, respectively. I've been using these switches for years and they seem to be popular in the homelab community.  I think the 4GB Raspberry Pi 4 is probably a good balance of affordability and resources. This setup was just a little sluggish on the Pi 3, but it worked fine once it was up and running. On 32-bit platforms like the Raspberry Pi 2, only older versions of Suricata seem to be available. * ⚓ Linux On Mobile ☛ 2025-09-14_[Older]_Weekly_GNU-like_Mobile_Linux Update_(37/2025):_Alarm_Week⠀⇛ ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 1268 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2025/09/20/Programming_Leftovers.1.shtml Gemini version at gemini://gemini.tuxmachines.org/n/2025/09/20/Programming_Leftovers.1.gmi ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ Programming Leftovers⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ posted by Roy Schestowitz on Sep 20, 2025 * ⚓ Karl Seguin ☛ Is_Zig's_New_Writer_Unsafe?⠀⇛ But what should the size of buffer be? If this was a one-and- done, maybe we'd leave it empty or put some seemingly sensible default, like 1K or 4K. If it was a mission critical piece of code, maybe we'd benchmark it or make it platform dependent. * ⚓ Dayvi Schuster ☛ Dev_Culture_Is_Dying_The_Curious_Developer_Is_Gone⠀⇛ If you have been in software development for a while, you might remember a time when developers were launching unique and innovative products and projects just for the sake of curiosity, learning or even just because they had a particular interest in a specific topic. This curiosity and problem solving mindset gave us some of the best tools that we still use today such as VLC, Linux, Git, Apache HTTP Server, Docker(arguably), and many many more. These tools were not created by large corporations or solopreneurs looking to increase their MMR or ARR. They were created by curious developers who wanted to solve a unique problem they had or even just wanted to learn something new. * ⚓ Dayvi Schuster ☛ In_Defense_of_C++⠀⇛ C++ has often and frequently been criticized for its complexity, steep learning curve, and most of all for its ability to allow the developers using it to not only shoot themselves in the foot, but to blow off their whole leg in the process. But do these criticisms hold up under scrutiny? Well, in this blog post, I aim to tackle some of the most common criticisms of C++ and provide a balanced perspective on its strengths and weaknesses. * ⚓ Uwe Friedrichsen ☛ The_process_deadlock⠀⇛ We discussed the origins of business processes, including the accompanying roles, hierarchies and templates. We saw how they tend to grow and solidify over time, reducing the effectiveness as well as the efficiency of the company even if they were introduced in the first place to improve them. We have seen why a process-driven company cannot properly respond to surprises and is not able to adapt to the changing needs of a highly dynamic post-industrial market exhibiting VUCA properties. Finally, we discussed what we need instead to build a resilient organization that is able to adapt and thrive in post-industrial markets. * ⚓ Daniel Doubrovkine ☛ Turning_Hypermedia_APIs_into_MCPs⠀⇛ I’ve written and talked extensively about Hypermedia APIs for about a decade. The HATEOAS constraints in representing resources for a RESTful API has numerous advantages in API design, readability, discoverability, and performance over a hand-rolled REST API. Unfortunately, adoption of Hypermedia APIs is very low compared to, for example GraphQL, but I find the implementation a lot simpler and continue adding Hypermedia APIs to my pet projects. * § R / R-Script⠀➾ o ⚓ Dirk Eddelbuettel ☛ RcppArmadillo_15.0.2-2_on_CRAN:_Transition_to Armadillo_15⠀⇛ Armadillo is a powerful and expressive C++ template library for linear algebra and scientific computing. It aims towards a good balance between speed and ease of use, has a syntax deliberately close to Matlab, and is useful for algorithm development directly in C++, or quick conversion of research code into production environments. RcppArmadillo integrates this library with the R environment and language–and is widely used by (currently) 1261 other packages on CRAN, downloaded 41.4 million times (per the partial logs from the cloud mirrors of CRAN), and the CSDA paper (preprint / vignette) by Conrad and myself has been cited 647 times according to Google Scholar. * § Python⠀➾ o ⚓ Marijke Luttekes ☛ Use_trimmed_in_Django_blocktranslate⠀⇛ Django offers us the blocktranslate tag to generate expansive or complex translation strings (messages), but it is not without its quirks. ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 1394 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2025/09/20/Programming_Leftovers.shtml Gemini version at gemini://gemini.tuxmachines.org/n/2025/09/20/Programming_Leftovers.gmi ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ Programming Leftovers⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ posted by Roy Schestowitz on Sep 20, 2025 * § R⠀➾ o ⚓ Rlang ☛ All_the_Ways_to_Programmatically_Edit_or_Parse_R_Markdown /_Quarto_Documents⠀⇛ o ⚓ Rlang ☛ Augmented_Dynamic_Adaptive_Model_(ADAM)_for_Daily Seasonal_Data⠀⇛ I have modeled the BIST 100 index to build predictive intervals. This week we finalized the set of features and major changes in Plasma 6.5, and released the first beta. I’d encourage everyone to test it out! One of the best ways these days is via KDE Linux. Many other distros also offer “unstable” KDE repos and the like. Please do test. For the next month, the Plasma team will be focusing on bug- fixing, so let us know what the bugs are! This week, the last few features landed, and we began The Great Plasma 6.5 Bug-Fix-a-Palooza... It overlaps with functionality provided by other services and the user story for how it fits into the desktop is unclear at best. However we also have to acknowledge that some people use activities to create a workflow that works for them.
