But many popular tools are expensive, closed-source, or limited to specific platforms. Fedora offers a fast, stable, and open environment for professional design work. With a growing ecosystem of free and open source software, architects can build a complete work-flow on Fedora, without sacrificing capability or control. Large tech companies in the US hire performance engineers (under that or other titles) to ensure that infrastructure costs and service latency don't grow too high, and that their service is reliable under peak load. A new performance team can likely find enough optimizations to halve infrastructure spend in their first couple of years, even for companies that have been using commercial performance or observability tools. Performance engineers do much more than those tools, working with development teams and vendors to build, test, debug, tune, and adopt new performance solutions, and to find deep optimizations that those tools can miss. * § Desktop Environments (DE)/Window Managers (WM)⠀➾ o § GNOME Desktop/GTK⠀➾ # ⚓ GNOME ☛ Christian_Hergert:_Week_31_Status⠀⇛ ✐ Foundry⠀✐ Added a new gutter renderer for diagnostics using the FoundryOnTypeDiagnostics described last week. According to a report from security outfit Group- IB, the attackers used a custom malware technique involving a bind mount to bury the malicious code deep inside the system. The ruse mimicked a rootkit by making the malware invisible to the underlying OS. They never managed to hijack the ATM switching server, but the move marks a serious upgrade for cyber-physical bank hacking. Group-IB didn’t spill where this plot unfolded or how the Pi got physically installed. Still, the implications are clear: banks may need to start watching their hardware closets, not just their firewalls. To keep the malware on life support, the hackers popped a mail server already plugged into the internet. The Raspberry Pi and the mail server chatted through the bank’s internal monitoring server, which had god-like access to nearly everything in the data centre. The 704 was a 1954 mainframe with the honor of being the first mass-produced computer that supported hardware-based floating point calculations. This functionality opened it up to a whole new dimension of scientific computing, with use by Bell Labs, US national laboratories, NACA (later NASA), and many universities. Much of this work involved turning equations for fluid dynamics and similar into programs that could be run on mainframes like the 704. This translating of formulas used to be done tediously in assembly languages before Backus’ Formula Translator (FORTRAN) was introduced to remove most of this tedium. been up, and good news: I don’t hate the name. That was the issue I had with it’s spiritual predecessor, and it got to a point where I wasn’t motivated to write on it anymore. I don’t have any of these feelings with this name. Nor do I hate the idea of writing technical stuff there and everything else here. I know this is not a concern for anyone else, but for a few years I struggled with the idea of keeping two separate sites and where things should go. With having a place to keep my technical knowledge separate and in a format that’s easier to navigate, I think those feelings are at rest. * ⚓ Best_GNU/Linux_Remote_Administration_Tools_2025_–_Complete_Guide⠀⇛ 🐳 🏢 🎭 Best GNU/Linux remote administration tools in 2025, covering configuration management, container orchestration, monitoring, and web-based administration for all organisation sizes. * ⚓ Expanding_battery_charge_control_support_in_Linux⠀⇛ Since GNOME 48, users can now preserve their battery health directly from GNOME Settings. The biggest challenge for the Release Team prior to Autumn release is source code management, as we want to transition both Tumbleweed and Leap 16.0 from legacy OBS SCM to Git. This will also require a new maintenance model for Leap. Users can expect a few more builds before we announce our Gold Master candidate. Given the nature of Leap 16 being built on top of binaries from SUSE Linux Enterprise 16, we can only do so once SUSE Linux Enterprise 16.0 announces their Gold Master in late September. If all goes well with the maintenance setup we could aim for the delivery according to the roadmap in October shortly before SLES 16.0. More details can be found in the roadmap and newly also in calendar.opensuse.org.
