While it's built to boot into an emulation frontend and play your favorite classic titles, it can do much more than that. The real fun begins when you explore the features that aren’t immediately obvious. With just a bit of creativity, you can turn Batocera into something far beyond a game launcher. Whether you’re a tinkerer, a collector of forgotten hardware, or someone who loves building fun and functional setups, Batocera gives you a lot to work with. These weird but incredible uses stretch the limits of what most people expect from a plug-and-play OS. And that’s precisely why they’re so satisfying to try. Once you have fully understood this abstraction, you will be able to write all sorts of sophisticated modern C++ services. Another important abstraction is Service, which is an advanced version of a pipeline. A pipeline is a chain of request/response handlers that handle upstream (handling request) and downstream (handling response). Once you chain handlers together, it provides an agile way to convert a raw data stream into the desired message type (class) and the inverse — desired message type to raw data stream. A handler should do one and only one function – just like the UNIX philosophy. If you have a handler that is doing more than one function than you should split it into individual handlers. This is really important for maintainability and flexibility as its common to change your protocol for one reason or the other. All shared state within handlers are not thread-safe. Only use shared state that is guarded by a mutex, atomic lock, etc. If you want to use a thread-safe container then it is recommended to use Folly’s lock-free data structures, which can be easily imported because they are a dependency of Wangle and are blazing fast. This is free and open source software. * ⚓ TkmViewer_-_analyse_TaskMonitor_output_-_LinuxLinks⠀⇛ TkmViewer is a graphical user interface to visualize output SQLite3 data format from the TaskMonitor daemon. After spending a long time with NixOS, switching to Bluestar felt refreshingly simple. For those unfamiliar, Bluestar Linux is based on Arch and features a customized KDE Plasma desktop with a strong visual identity. It comes with up-to-date packages and kernel, a live version, a wide range of desktop and multimedia software, and both 32- and 64-bit versions. There's also a dedicated Bluestar repository that offers additional apps beyond the standard Arch repos. What sets Bluestar apart is how it brings together design cues from Windows, macOS, and traditional Linux environments. The top panel mirrors what you’d typically find in many Linux setups, offering quick access to system functions, indicators, and application controls. The desktop includes Windows-style icons for files and folders, while the bottom of the screen features a taskbar-like dock with centered icons, similar to macOS. Bluestar ships with a dark theme, beautiful wallpapers, and a fully configured KDE Plasma environment that delivers macOS-level visual refinement right out of the box. That said, don’t mistake Bluestar for a clone of macOS or Windows. Underneath the polished surface, it’s still a Linux system based on Arch. Choose freedom and switch to GNU Jami — We've been recommending GNU Jami along with other free communication tools for some time now. It, like many other actively developed free programs, has been steadily acquiring both new users and new features. According to a talk we had with a representative from GNU Jami's parent company, users have increased dramatically since Skype's shutdown. Considering how harmful network effects can be, this is a win for the free software movement. Communication tools, like social networks, are only helpful so long as you can use them to actually communicate with others. Now more than ever, it's important to hold our most private conversations on free (as in freedom) software. At the same time, we need to be taking as many steps as possible to welcome users to free communication platforms, not only by making sure it runs on both free and nonfree operating systems, but by investing time and energy into accessibility and localization. By way of example, GNU Jami now allows for multi-byte Unicode usernames, an important feature for people speaking languages that don't utilize the Latin alphabet. It's great to hear that free tools are growing, but it's even more refreshing to hear a developer say what they don't know about their userbase. In the case of Jami, data is only inferred instead of collected. Recording more detailed information about the network may be helpful to developers, but it also opens the door to later misuse, as happened for example, with Zoom's usage of the Facebook SDK. Whereas a proprietary software company's claims about encryption are often impossible to verify, free/libre software is not kept secret from the public. Free software is a prerequisite for true privacy. Applications that rely on ImageMagick for image manipulation, particularly through the resize() and text() methods, are at risk, especially if they accept user-controlled input such as filenames or text content. * ⚓ Embarcadero Inc ☛ Coming_in_RAD_Studio_13:_A_Conditional_Ternary Operator_for_the_Delphi_Language⠀⇛ A ternary or conditional operator is an operator which behaves like an if statement, with a condition and two possible values. In many other programming languages, the ternary operator is indicated using the ?: syntax. In Delphi, we want to preserve as much as possible a familiar and Pascal-oriented syntax, so we decided to use the if symbol as an operator. In other words, if can now be used to indicate a statement or an operator, depending on the position in the source code. This is an example of a simple assignment expression in two versions, the first based on a traditional if statement and the second on an if operator: [...] * ⚓ Buttondown LLC ☛ 2000_words_about_arrays_and_tables⠀⇛ I'm way too discombobulated from getting next month's release of Logic for Programmers ready, so I'm pulling a idea from the slush pile. Once upon a time – let’s say 2013, just for good measure – Anke Boersma, a Dutch open source advocate and developer, thought it might be a good idea to build a Linux distro around the KDE desktop and its family of software. The original goal of this distro would be to offer a highly optimized and polished KDE Plasma experience while remaining fully independent — built from scratch and not based on any other Linux distribution. So that year, the distro KdeOS was born, and by nearly all accounts it was a solid distro. However, to prevent confusion between the distro’s moniker and the desktop environment of the same name, later that year the distro was renamed KaOS. Fast forward a dozen years to today, when KaOS has just released its 2025.07 release with several changes from the previous release. The 3.7 GB ISO includes the KDE Plasma 6.4.3 desktop — no surprise — and the latest version of KDE’s software suite. University of Toronto ☛ Some_practical_challenges_of_access_management in_'IAM'_systems⠀⇛ Suppose that you have a shiny new IAM system, and you take the 'access management' part of it seriously. Global access management is (or should be) simple; if you disable or suspect someone in your IAM system, they should wind up disabled everywhere. Well, they will wind up unable to authenticate. If they have existing credentials that are used without checking with your IAM system (including things like 'an existing SSH login'), you'll need some system to propagate the information that someone has been disabled in your IAM to consumers and arrange that existing sessions, credentials, and so on get shut down and revoked. * ⚓ Adam_Young:_Find_files_to_download_from_Apache_default_pages⠀⇛ Apache provides a pretty standard screen to display directoyr contents if you do not provide any mods. There are many ways you can do this: you can cache objects in code (with memcached or redis) or you can cache responses with varnish, nginx or in my case with Apache.
