However, I often dabble with Linux, and during my journey, I've experimented with several distributions. If you have ever done so, you know that there is a plethora of distributions to choose from. I’ve used Ubuntu, Mint, OpenSUSE, Debian, Tails, and several others. The number of Linux distros to choose from is limitless. Ultimately, I found that ZorinOS is the ideal way for Windows users to embark on their own journey into the Linux world. This Ubuntu-based distro features a familiar start menu, a movable taskbar, a familiar file manager, taskbar app previews, app pinning, productivity apps like the free and open-source, and built-in apps that are familiar to users. Additionally, it offers the ability to install Windows (.exe, .msi) applications through a Wine and Bottles- based feature, which ZorinOS refers to as Windows App Support. First up, Calibre has standardized its scrollbar design across light and dark modes. Previously, the two themes had slightly different scrollbar styles, but now, the higher-contrast dark mode version has been carried over to light mode as well. For Kobo device owners, Calibre 8.5 introduces a handy new template option to customize how series numbers are displayed—a welcome addition for readers who like their libraries neatly organized. I benchmark the Orange Pi 5 Ultra, Orange Pi 5 Max, Orange Pi RV2 against a Raspberry Pi 5 and a DreamQuest N100 Mini PC. The tests are run using the Phoronix Test Suite. What’s the rationale of benchmarking the Orange Pi SBCs against an N100? Simple! This series is looking at using the Orange Pi’s range as desktop machines, and the N100 is a hugely popular Intel processor found in many low-cost mini PCs. Normally when I benchmark a machine, I look at benchmarks that focus on system performance, processor, memory/graphics, disk/ WiFi. But the SBCs don’t come with a disk. There’s no wire clutter, and you can connect anywhere in your home. Almost all modern devices can connect to Wi-Fi from desktops to smartphones. And you can have many devices connected and streaming simultaneously. But on balance, I prefer ethernet over Wi-Fi, as it offers more reliable and consistent connections with faster connection speeds. Upgrading to a 2.5 Gbps ethernet network offers faster speeds, improved responsiveness, and future-proofs your network, especially for devices using WiFi 6 and beyond. It’s a sensible upgrade for users who need more bandwidth for tasks like 4K streaming, online gaming, and faster file transfers to NAS devices. * ⚓ Cuneo_is_a_widget-like_calculator_and_conversion_tool_-_LinuxLinks⠀⇛ Cuneo is a simple and straightforward app that lets you calculate and convert anything you might encounter in your daily life. Being designed like a widget, Cuneo gets out of the way and is best used floating over a maximized window so you can focus on your actual tasks and not managing a calculation app covering half your screen. Cuneo’s name is inspired by the ancient writing system cuneiform. It is the earliest known wiritng system that’s been originally used by the Sumer civilization. At the time, in my eyes, it was a revolution: the ability to see the code, contribute, fork it, and give a project a new direction - perhaps a parallel one, or something completely different. Like OpenBSD from NetBSD, DragonflyBSD from FreeBSD, or Nextcloud from Owncloud - the examples are endless. It was about freedom, the chance to be part of something or, in some cases, at the very center of something: its development. * ⚓ [Old] Brian Hicks ☛ signing_commits_with_SSH_keys⠀⇛ I'm gonna run some experiments to figure that out. To start with, I use two git forges: GitHub and Gitea (although I plan to migrate to Forgejo once it's in a stable version of nixpkgs.) I want to make sure that I can get verified commits on both. I'm most interested in what happens when I revoke keys. Generally speaking, I generate one SSH key per machine I use for development. That way, no key ever has to leave the machine it was generated on. So what happens if I retire a machine, along with its key? Will all my commits turn into unsigned commits? GitHub's documentation implies that it might be fine, but I don't know. * ⚓ Brian Hicks ☛ Should_we_design_for_iffy_[Internet]?⠀⇛ I dug around, and here's some data. My goal here is not to beat anyone over the head with "THOU SHALT NOT ASSUME GOOD INTERNET" but to give an idea about the scope of broadband rollout in the US in a way that can help inform choices we make when designing software. If you don't feel like reading this whole thing, here's the bottom line up front: you can probably assume [Internet] access in somewhere around 97% of US households, but you should not assume that it's better than around 25Mbps down and 3Mbps up, and latency may be significantly worse than you previously assumed. This is likely worse for B2C software than B2B. * ⚓ University of Toronto ☛ I_feel_open_source_has_turned_into_two_worlds⠀⇛ Obvious general examples of the latter are the Debian Linux distribution and BSD distributions like OpenBSD and FreeBSD. These are independent open source projects that are maintained by volunteers (although some of them are paid to work on the project). Everyone is working together in cooperation and the result is no one's product or owned object. And at the small scale, everyone who incorporates libxml2, some Python module, or whatever into a personal open source thing is part of this cooperative sphere. * ⚓ [Old] J Kenneth King ☛ Agentultra_-_Designing_Boring_Software_with Functional_Programming_-_Part_1⠀⇛ Functional programming languages, such as Haskell, have a reputation for being languages that are designed for researchers to write white papers and not for practical software. I believe this reputation is undeserved. In this post I’m going to show you how I design software in Haskell for businesses. Functional programming languages are all good at this. I happen to use Haskell at my job and on my stream and I think it is particularly well suited to the task of designing and building line-of-business software. * ⚓ Writing_a_Monadic_Interpreter_in_Haskell⠀⇛ Back in my second year of college, I had just started exploring functional programming. I was picking up Haskell out of curiosity - it felt different, abstract, and honestly a bit intimidating at first. Around the same time, I was also diving into topics like context-free grammars, automata theory, parse trees, and the Chomsky hierarchy - all the foundational concepts that explain how programming languages are parsed, interpreted, and understood by machines. * ⚓ Evan Hahn ☛ An_unfinished_post:_"Compressing_short_Unicode_strings_with BOCU-1"⠀⇛ This post is not finished. If you’re interested in taking it over, let_me_know, and I can send you all the notes I have. With that out of the way, here’s my draft post. [...] BOCU-1, short for “Binary Ordered Compression for Unicode”, is a character encoding. You probably shouldn’t use it. As its name suggests, it is primarily focused on compressing text. It usually does a worse job than generic compressors like gzip, but can do a better job for short strings containing non- Latin-alphabet characters. This post aims to explain BOCU-1 well enough that you could write your own implementation, as well as describe its pros and cons. Again, you probably shouldn’t use it. * ⚓ Dave Gauer ☛ Store_as_HTML,_Edit_as_LML⠀⇛ If you’re feeling somewhat philosophical, you could say that this method uses an LML as an interface for editing HTML. * § Shell/Bash/Zsh/Ksh⠀➾ o ⚓ TecMint ☛ 5_Bash_Scripts_I_Use_Daily_as_a_Linux_SysAdmin⠀⇛ Bash scripts are like tiny assistants that help you automate common tasks, reduce human error, and save valuable time. She was initially in her office (connected via ethernet cable), and then moved to multiple conference rooms (Wi-Fi), and is currently on a business trip (multiple VPN sessions). It is important that we know when her device started and stopped specific IPs, because the IPs are likely in a dynamic assignment pool, which means they are automatically reassigned to new devices. For example: If she was only assigned a Wi-Fi IP address for 20 minutes, then those 20 minutes are the only times we care about that IP address. This is a common investigation requirement, so let’s see if we can automate it. * § idroot⠀➾ o ⚓ ID Root ☛ How_To_Install_OnlyOffice_on_Rocky_GNU/Linux_10⠀⇛ In this tutorial, we will show you how to install OnlyOffice on Rocky GNU/Linux 10. They existed for several years, most notably from brands like Ayaneo and, before it, GPD, but the Steam Deck is what kicked off the renaissance of portable PC gaming that's brought us devices like the ROG Ally X and Legion Go S. But Valve didn't just revolutionize portable gaming. It revolutionized Linux gaming more broadly. We've had the Steam Deck and SteamOS for a few years now, and we've seen new, gaming-focused Linux distros like Bazzite that leverage Valve's work on Proton to widen the appeal of Linux gaming. But now, we're standing on the cusp of what feels like an inflection point for Linux. The backing of the multi-billion-dollar corporation that is Valve, the wider rollout of SteamOS, and broadening awareness of Linux gamers has created a concoction that might actually push it into the mainstream.
