It's pretty common for older hardware to be left behind as software evolves. However, that doesn't mean your system is ready for an e-waste dump. As I explored in a recent guide, there is a fantastic selection of Linux distros that can turn your old Windows PC into a responsive machine. I discussed some of these options, such as Linux Lite, Bodhi Linux, and Peppermint OS, in the guide. However, one great thing about Linux is the vast number of options available to meet your needs. So, here are five more Linux distributions that are lean, resource- efficient, and ready to unlock the untapped potential of your old Windows PC. Each of these distros offers something unique and is backed by a rock-solid foundation. Then the static website hosting providers I used were pretty comfortable and I didn’t have to worry about configuration, security, updates, backups, bandwidth, uptime, bots, and more. I could just pay and have everything handled for me, so I forgot about it. * § Games⠀➾ o ⚓ Idiomdrottning ☛ Scaling_philosophy_(for_old_games)⠀⇛ As you can see he’s pretty small. That’s because he was made in 1992 for a NES game with 240p resolution. * § Distributions and Operating Systems⠀➾ o § BSD/Storage⠀➾ # ⚓ David Rosenthal ☛ The_State_Of_Storage⠀⇛ The Register is running a series on The State Of Storage. Below the fold I flag some articles worth reading. o § Open Hardware/Modding⠀➾ # ⚓ Linux Gizmos ☛ Tokay_Pro_Replaces_ESP32_with_NXP_i.MX_8M Plus_for_Industrial_Edge_AI⠀⇛ Maxlab launched the Tokay Lite in 2023, an open- source ESP32 camera with 2MP video at 15 FPS and edge AI features like facial recognition. The new Tokay Pro upgrades to an NXP i.MX 8M Plus for real- time detection, modular sensors, and high-res video in industrial applications. # ⚓ Raspberry Pi ☛ Igniting_innovation:_How_Experience_AI_is empowering_teachers_and_students_across_Kenya⠀⇛ Teachers are eager to understand AI, not only to better prepare their students for the future, but also for their own professional growth. * § Free, Libre, and Open Source Software⠀➾ o ⚓ FSF ☛ FSF_adds_provisional_board_member_Alexandre_Oliva⠀⇛ The FSF has advanced Alexandre Oliva as provisional board member. Oliva was the last candidate to be decided on after the call for candidates on June 19, 2023, and will begin participating in board meetings effective immediately. o § Web Browsers/Web Servers⠀➾ # ⚓ Alex Petros ☛ The_Server_Doesn't_Render_Anything⠀⇛ Upon hearing this, web developers often reply “oh, you like server-side rendering,” to which I usually wince and answer “more or less.” You have to pick your battles when chipping away at a decade of miseducation. At least people know what I’m talking about. But “server-side rendering” is a horrible term. It implies that the server is not just doing more work, but doing hard work, work that’s best left to the experts. None of this is true. You, too, can do server-side “rendering,” with essentially no effort, in whatever programming language you prefer. Once you understand that, you’ll start to see the web the way I do: as the simplest, easiest, and most powerful interface for computation ever created. o § SaaS/Back End/Databases⠀➾ # ⚓ Paul Gross ☛ Double-Entry_Ledgers:_The_Missing_Primitive_in Modern_Software⠀⇛ I think ledgers are underutilized in software development today. Specifically, double-entry ledger modeling would be a better fit in a lot of systems than the ad-hoc ledger-ish things they currently have. This is why I’ve been working on pgledger, a pure PostgreSQL ledger implementation. If adding a ledger implementation is super simple, then I’m hoping more folks will do it. And it can become another modeling primitive that we reach for to accomplish all sorts of things. o § Productivity Software/LibreOffice/Calligra⠀➾ # ⚓ The Register UK ☛ LibreOffice_adds_voice_to_'ditch_Windows for_Linux'_campaign⠀⇛ The title of the blog post is self-explanatory. The end of Windows 10 is approaching, so it's time to consider Linux and LibreOffice. They're right. The post also links to the KDE-backed End of 10 campaign, which we covered a month ago. That site's list of places to go for help has been improved with a zoomable world map, but we feel it still badly needs some kind of hierarchical organization. The blog also links to Distro Chooser, which is a noble idea, but with flawed execution. This site leads you through a set of questions and then recommends what Linux distributions might suit you. We found the presentation of the results overwhelming, though. It seems to be a list of all the candidates, color-coded according to how good a match they are. The Reg FOSS desk generally feels that "Less is more," and here, just distilling the results down to, say, a top three would far be more helpful. o § Content Management Systems (CMS) / Static Site Generators (SSG)⠀➾ # ⚓ Jasper Tandy ☛ Jasper_is_blogging:_I've_rebuilt_this_site and_it's_pretty_much_static_now.⠀⇛ Tags are kinda gone. They're on their way out. Generating paginated tags for everything generates about 2,000 URLs. I just can't believe that people even use them, so tags are now a feature of search. I may start to monitor how much this even gets used and remove it altogether. So, yes. "Static". o § Education⠀➾ # ⚓ Stefano Marinelli ☛ Where_Have_You_Been_for_the_Last_20 Years?⠀⇛ I'm writing these words while we're heading back to the hotel, after the final reception following BSDCan. A moment of serenity, lightness, and sociability that perfectly closes what BSDCan embodied. And right now, this sense of positivity and sadness for the end of the event is pushing these words onto this uncomfortable mobile keyboard. # ⚓ MWL ☛ Buy_Your_Paperbacks_Directly_From_Me⠀⇛ I am excited beyond words. I have been working towards this ever since my first book came out in 1992. Benefits to you? Those bundles I offer, like the FreeBSD Storage Mastery bundle? There’s now a discount print version. That ridiculous The Full Michael bundle that includes everything I’ve indie published? You can now buy the whole thing in paperback. Do I expect anyone to drop $624 on a stack of books? No. But I am delighted to have that degree of control. ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 432 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2025/06/18/Free_and_Open_Source_Software_and_Review.shtml Gemini version at gemini://gemini.tuxmachines.org/n/2025/06/18/Free_and_Open_Source_Software_and_Review.gmi ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ Free and Open Source Software, and Review⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ posted by Rianne Schestowitz on Jun 18, 2025 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇paint_brush⦈_ * ⚓ Zas_is_a_simple_static_site_generator_-_LinuxLinks⠀⇛ Zas is a static site generator which offers a zen-like experience: a layout and some Markdown files as pages with unobtrusive structure and configuration. OTI uses a client-side encryption architecture to ensure maximum security... * ⚓ tui_mines_-_text-based_mine_sweeping_puzzle_game_-_LinuxLinks⠀⇛ tui mines is a text-based user interface implementation of the classic mine sweeping puzzle game. The user has to clear a board, square by square, flagging the squares suspected to hide mines on the way. If the user opens a mine square, things go KABOOM! and the game is lost. The user uses hints from the numbered squares. This numbers how many bombs are touching that square in every direction ( 8 in total). For instance a square with the number 2, will be ‘touching’ 2 bombs. * ⚓ Intehill_13.4"_4K+_Touchscreen_Portable_Monitor_U13ZT_Review_- LinuxLinks⠀⇛ Using the touchscreen in Linux is simple and snappy. Basic touchscreen support has for many years been available with most Linux desktop environments. My recommendation is to use GNOME or KDE on Wayland; they offer good multi-touch support, including swipe gestures for navigation. For a 13.4″ display, it’s generally recommended to use 300% scaling otherwise text is way too small to be readable. Personally, I found 300% to be a little high, yet 200% to be insufficient. That means I need to use fractional scaling. Linux has two popular display server technologies: Wayland and X11, and many desktop environments including KDE and GNOME. They each have advantages and disadvantages. When it comes to fractional scaling, I think the best solution is to use Wayland with KDE. I love KDE’s fractional scaling, it’s simply first class. While I’m the biggest fan of GNOME, its fractional scaling support is experimental. * ⚓ DavMail_is_a_POP/IMAP/SMTP/Caldav/Carddav/LDAP_exchange_gateway_- LinuxLinks⠀⇛ DavMail now includes an LDAP gateway to Exchange global address book and user personal contacts to allow recipient address completion in mail compose window and full calendar support with attendees free/busy display. The main goal of DavMail is to provide standard compliant protocols in front of proprietary Exchange. This means LDAP for global address book, SMTP to send messages, IMAP to browse messages on the server in any folder, POP to retrieve inbox messages only, Caldav for calendar support and Carddav for personal contacts sync. Thus any standard compliant client can be used with Microsoft Exchange. This is free and open source software. * ⚓ Koivisto_is_a_strong_chess_engine_-_LinuxLinks⠀⇛ Koivisto is a strong chess engine. A server of the time would likely be using select to multiplex IO. I’m imagining a server might assume that each connection can only create one wakeup for one reason at a time. We wake up to read from the net connection. We read the MAIL FROM, then start some operation to check that, and wait for a response. If we wake up again because the net connection has RCPT TO pending, we might reply to that before the from address has been checked. This is quite some time before SPF, but we can imagine something like it. o § Shell/Bash/Zsh/Ksh⠀➾ # ⚓ David Mead ☛ Blink_and_you'll_miss_it_—_a_URL_handler surprise⠀⇛ Blink is a mobile shell for iOS and iPadOS. This means it only allows non- conflicting IP address assignments and all network interfaces on the system are connected to a single routing table. Therefore, all interfaces on an OpenBSD server belong to rdomain 0 by default. Assuming that IP Forwarding is enabled and pf(4) allows it, traffic will flow freely between all interfaces. The functionality is also present in user-land tools such as dhclient(8) and dhcpd(8) and in the routing protocol daemons like ospfd(8), and bgpd(8). So I grabbed a couple of spare servers we had with reasonably modern CPUs (by our limited standards), put our standard Ubuntu 24.04 on them, and took a quick look to see how fast I could make them go over 1G networking. To my surprise, the answer is that WireGuard can saturate that 1G network with no particularly special tuning, and the system CPU usage is relatively low (4.5% on the client iperf3 side, 8% on the server iperf3 side; each server has a single Xeon E-2226G). The low usage suggests that we could push well over 1G of WireGuard bandwidth through a 10G link, which means that I'm going to set one up for testing at some point. * ⚓ SusamPal ☛ overflow-wrap_vs_break-word⠀⇛ ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 1970 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2025/06/18/Want_to_ditch_Windows_This_Linux_distro_makes_that_transition_e.shtml Gemini version at gemini://gemini.tuxmachines.org/n/2025/06/18/Want_to_ditch_Windows_This_Linux_distro_makes_that_transition_e.gmi ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ Want to ditch Windows?
